Learn How To Cure Sleep Apnea

Stop Snore

This type of snore stop mouthpiece positions the tongue slightly forward in the mouth, keeping it from flopping back against the soft palate, which is a leading cause of snoring. While some brands of mandibular advancement devices claim that 95% of users are helped by them, there isn't a clinically controlled study of over the counter (OTC) devices, and the results of tests of mandibular advancement devices fitted by dentists, though mostly positive, are not uniformly positive.

The OTC devices are able to be customized to some extent because they are made from malleable plastic that the user can boil to soften, and then bite to custom fit. The plastic will harden as it cools. This is sometimes called the "boil and bite" fitting technique.
The devices that are custom made by dentists use a more thorough procedure, where impression molds are made of the user's teeth and the device is made from scratch to fit. The ones made by dentists can cost over $1,000, while most OTC devices cost in the $25 to $50 range.

Some users will try an OTC device first, to see if results are promising, and then have a custom device made. The custom devices are reported to be more comfortable, encouraging snorers to use them regularly. Some snorers have even found success with OTC custom athletic mouth guards, which usually cost $20 or less.

According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, a stop snore mouth piece can be an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, a potentially dangerous form of snoring where the snorer actually stops breathing for several seconds at a time. What typically happens is that after the person has stopped breathing for a few seconds, he or she "jerks awake" long enough to start breathing again, but the cycle repeats itself.

OSA can ruin not only the sleeping hours of the snorer, but the sleeping hours of the snorers partner. Daytime alertness can be severely affected too, resulting in increased dangers from driving or controlling machinery.

    • ANSWER:
It's possible to treat snoring through lifestyle modifications such as losing weight, quitting smoking, changing sleep habits, and avoiding alcohol and sedatives before you go to bed. If snoring is due to nasal congestion, nasal strips, decongestants, or nasal corticosteroid sprays may be used. If these modifications do not improve the snoring, then it is time to see a doctor.

I'm 31 and I do snore. Not load apparently but I do. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it is true that overweight people tend to snore. You can try sleeping on your stomach or buy one of those snore stoppers (something you put on your nose) but I myself never tried it so I am not sure how useful it is. Most important, if it does not bother you, and nobody else sleeps with you, don’t worry about the snoring.

I snore so loudly my neighbours complain!
    Please help.
I sleep downstairs most of the time because of this and my sofas are hard and still neighbours complain.
I'm not that over weight i'm a reasonable size for a 40 year old and I have the occasional drink on special occasions.
    Please help.

    • ANSWER:
Letting us know you are not over weight and only drink occasionally means you know one or two things about causes of snoring.

Something you also have to do is find out what causes your own snoring. Could it be because of nasal congestion? Is it the way you sleep at night (upwards) causing your throat to be partially blocked by your tongue. Identifying the possible cause will guide you to the best solution.

If you are really bothered about this why not visit a sleep study center for an assessment or just tell your doctor to monitor you. You can also research on your own online to discover some ideas.

    • ANSWER:

  9. QUESTION:
what causes people to snore when they are sleeping and is there a way a person can stop snoring?

    • ANSWER:
The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing.

People who snore may suffer from:

Poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat. When muscles are too relaxed, either from alcohol or drugs that cause sleepiness, the tongue falls backwards into the airway or the throat muscles draw in from the sides into the airway. This can also happen during deep sleep.
Excessive bulkiness of throat tissue. Children with large tonsils and adenoids often snore. Overweight people have bulky neck tissue, too. Cysts or tumors can also cause bulk, but they are rare.
Long soft palate and/or uvula. A long palate narrows the opening from the nose into the throat. As it dangles, it acts as a noisy flutter valve during relaxed breathing. A long uvula makes matters even worse.
Obstructed nasal airways. A stuffy or blocked nose requires extra effort to pull air through it. This creates an exaggerated vacuum in the throat, and pulls together the floppy tissues of the throat, and snoring results. So, snoring often occurs only during the hay fever season or with a cold or sinus infection.

Adults who suffer from snoring should try the following self-help remedies:

Adopt a healthy and athletic lifestyle to develop good muscle tone and lose weight.
Avoid tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and antihistamines before bedtime.
Avoid alcohol for at least four hours and heavy meals or snacks for three hours before retiring.
      Establish regular sleeping patterns
Sleep on your side rather than your back.
Tilt the head of your bed upwards four inches.
Remember, snoring means obstructed breathing, and obstruction can be serious. It's not funny, and not hopeless.

      (EXTREME CASES)
Snoring or obstructive sleep apnea may respond to various treatments now offered by many otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons:

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is surgery for treating obstructive sleep apnea. It tightens flabby tissues in the throat and palate, and expands air passages.
Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty (TAP) refers to procedures and techniques that treat snoring and some of them also are used to treat various severities of obstructive sleep apnea. Different types of TAP include bipolar cautery, laser, and radiofrequency. Laser Assisted Uvula Palatoplasty (LAUP) treats snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea by removing the obstruction in the airway. A laser is used to vaporize the uvula and a specified portion of the palate in a series of small procedures in a doctor's office under local anesthesia. Radiofrequency ablation—some with temperature control approved by the FDA—utilizes a needle electrode to emit energy to shrink excess tissue to the upper airway including the palate and uvula (for snoring), base of the tongue (for obstructive sleep apnea), and nasal turbinates (for chronic nasal obstruction).
Genioglossus and hyod advancement is a surgical procedure for the treatment of sleep apnea. It prevents collapse of the lower throat and pulls the tongue muscles forward, thereby opening the obstructed airway.

Are the 'stop snore' rings any use or are they just a scam?
I'm searching on ebay for something to stop or reduce snoring and came across this -

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/SNORING-INSOMNIA-END-IT-NOW-WITH-THE-STOP-SNORE-RING_W0QQitemZ130315173966QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Health_HealthCare_RL?hash=item1e5763c04e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1301%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I heard about these rings years ago so I'm just wondering if they are any use.

Have you any suggestions of your own?

    • ANSWER:
There has been a lot of negative feedback about snoring rings, and some of the positive feedback has even been attributed to a placebo effect (your mind convincing you it's working).

Posture correction, and snoring pillows are most likely better solutions.

  14. QUESTION:
I'm thinking about getting a pug but I heard they snore how do I stop it from snoring?
I heard pugs snore loudly and to me it is a bit irritating.

    • ANSWER:
if snoring is going to bother you, a pug is absolutely NOT a good dog for you at all. I can tell you have done little to no research yet either.

Pugs have extremely short noses making them a "brachycephalic" dog. The short air passageways is what makes the breathing loud since it is very hard for these dogs to breathe properly since there is barely any room in their airways. It is virtually impossible to prevent these dogs from snoring and breathing loudly, the dog's nose is genetically short. I advise you to look into other breeds, or perhaps a mixed breed that is not a brachycephalic breed such as a pug, boxer, bull dog, boston terrier, etc.

Before you get any dog, do GOOD research, Y answers is not the right place for you to do your research.

  15. QUESTION:
Boyfriend started to snore and its keeping me up. how can he stop?
He started to snore alot inthe past few weeks. It worse when he's had a few beers. But lately without beers it got worse too. He just laughs it off when i mention it? Anything i can do to help him stop without him knowing? or anything to stop the snoring? thanks for replies

    • ANSWER:
well if its really bad and you cant get him to change it then why not get ear plugs? I had to get ear plugs to sleep beside my fiance. He was keeping me awake all the time. it used to be only when he slept on his back now its any shape lol. drives me insane. so i tried the strips, but he didnt like using them, and despises doctors, so i thought you know what instead of forcing him to go to the doctor i would just wear ear plugs, now i get a wonderful sleep and can cuddle my fiance at night again.

try it and good luck to you. i know how awful it can be!!

  16. QUESTION:
What are some simple ways to reduce or stop snoring?
I have a roommate I keep waking up, but I never snore unless I'm in that dorm room. Is there medication or techniques that can help me reduce or stop snoring?

    • ANSWER:
Losing weight can help but if you arent overweight - dont.

A tennis ball sewn into your sleep shirt can help as it prevents you rolling onto your back which exacerbates snoring.

Also those nose patches like bandaids - they can open up your sinuses to help you breath more clearly.

Thats my best hope it helps :)

  17. QUESTION:
What is a god way for my parents to stop snoring?
They just recently got back together and they are 60 years old. They both snore so bad that they keep each other awake at night. They've had to resort to sleeping in separate rooms, it's so bad. What can they try to maybe not snore, or not snore so intensely? They snore in all positions so rolling each other over does not work. Does anyone know if those pillows that are supposed to stop snoring actually work? Does anyone know what they can try?

    • ANSWER:
They need to lose some weight and get on a good nutritional program that will make them healthy. Snoring is one sign of bad health. Some people have sleep apneas that can be life threatening and others have loose tissue that "flaps in the wind" and rattles when they relax while sleeping.

What most people find is that when they lose weight and improve their diet so they are getting good nutrients in their bodies, the snoring goes away or is greatly reduced.

      good luck to you

  18. QUESTION:
Why do I snore while sleeping? How can I stop it?

There are surgeries, but those are expensive.

  19. QUESTION:

I have a friend and i stay at his house often, as soon as he passed out he starts a horrible snore and i lie awake all night.

  20. QUESTION:
How can I stop snoring? My husband says I snore really loud!?

    • ANSWER:
Hi. The absolute best way is to find out the reason behind your snoring. This could be a number of things like being overweight or drinking alcohol, smoking, sleeping pills, nasal blockage or other more serious issues like sleep apnea (OSA).

If you snore through your nose then nasal strips should help you.

If you snore through the throat then mouth pieces - see my article "Mouth Piece for Snoring | Snore Ex Mouthpiece | REVIEWS" http://sleepdisorders.dolyan.com/snoring/mouth-piece-for-snoring-snore-ex-mouthpiece-reviews.

If you find (or your husband tells you) that depending on yoru body position you snore more or less then a corrective sleeping pillow may work for you - see my article "Sleep Innovations Pillows | Sleep Innovations Memory Foam Pillow REVIEW" http://sleepdisorders.dolyan.com/snoring/anti-snore-solutions/sleep-innovations-pillows-sleep-innovations-memory-foam-pillow-review.

Lastly, here is a full list of both home remedies and devices which all work to stop people's snoring. Read the list and see which situation connects with your specific case. Article "Snore cures" http://sleepdisorders.dolyan.com/snoring/snore-cures.

The good news is that snoring for sure can be cured either by taking care of the reason behind why you snore or by using devices which stop the snoring (but don't cure the underlying reason).

      Best of luck to you.

  23. QUESTION:
What causes people to snore? Is there a way to stop someone from snoring?
It`s hard for me to sleep when other people are snoring...

    • ANSWER:
Pretty much everybody snores. Even my cat. It is loose tissue inside the throat that makes that sound as the sleeper inhales and exhales deeply. Sometimes surgery can cure bad snoring. Also, there is a spray you can buy that is like a numbing/shrinking agent that you spray into your mouth before you go to sleep. It works for a little while. What really works well is if the awake person stuffs some 32 db noise reduction earplugs in their ears, or takes a sleeping pill.

  24. QUESTION:
Is there any non-surgical way to stop snoring?
I doubt it's nasal congestion because I don't have trouble breathing when I'm awake. But my sister tells me that I snore. I know for a fact that I do, but just do not know how to stop.

    • ANSWER:
Well, there are different methods...including some sleep tests and exercises that a sleep specialist can give you, but before you go through all that trouble and money, you should try Breathe Right. They are nasal strips that you stick on the bridge of your nose before going to sleep and they actually reduce and sometimes completely eliminate snoring. You can buy them at any drugstore and they also sell them at Costco. They have different sizes so make sure you get the right size for you.

Is there anyway to stop someone from snoring?
To me snoring is annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone who sleeps next to me on another bed starts to snore after 15 mins and her snoring sounds like a bubble popping in cartoons and it takes me at least 2 hours to fall asleep. anyway how do you stop someone to stop snoring?

    • ANSWER:
There are lots of ways to try and stop snoring, but it is worth trying to find out what is causing it.

It’s usually pretty simple really, snoring occurs when there is some kind of blockage in the breathing passage when you fall asleep. The airflow in your bronchial passage becomes irregular due to the constriction that occurs when your throat relaxes. Disrupted airflow then causes the soft palette in the breathing passages to flap causing the snoring sound. It’s like a door banging open and shut in the wind.

So keeping the airways open is the key. Here are some suggestions to achieve that:

      • Elevate your head by sleeping on a thicker pillow or multiple pillows will help reduce your snoring, a pillow that's too soft encourages your throat muscles to relax and narrows your air passageway.
      • Don't drink alcoholic beverages, take sleeping pills, tranquilizers, or antihistamines right before going to sleep, they will cause your muscles to relax and limit your air passage way.
      • Avoid dairy products, which can cause mucus build-up right before you go to sleep.
      • If you are overweight, losing some weight will reduce snoring by increasing the space in your air passage way.
      • Sleeping on your side instead of your back
      • Try following a regular sleep routine.
      • Don't eat a big meal right before bed, if your stomach is full it will push up on your diaphragm and limit breathing passage ways.
      • If you are a smoker, stop smoking, if that is not feasible then avoid smoking right before you go to bed. Smoking causes inflammation and swelling of the throat.
      • Try exercising the muscles in your jaw, mouth and throat - strengthening these will reduce the airway collapsing when you are relaxed
      • It is important that you Consult a medical professional if your snoring continues to adversely affect your sleep as you may have sleep apnoea.

There are many other Stop Snoring Aids available such as nasal strips, sprays, mouth guards or even surgery, but I would sugest exhausting the list above, and doing the excercises before you go down that path.

      Good Luck

    • ANSWER:
First, try to pinpoint the cause of your snoring. Is it congestion, incorrect jaw position, or something more serious such as sleep apnea? Once that is discovered, take steps to correct it. If congestion is the issue, which it might be if you suffer from sinus infections and such, try OTC and herbal remedies such as tea or a honey/ginger mixture, along with nasal strips. If it is your jaw positioning, then a quick doctor visit can get you a mouth piece to ensure that your jaw muscles, tongue and teeth stay in the correct position during sleep. Mouth guards can be bought OTC but a doctor can better determine if that is the cause and help to ensure you have a proper fit. Hope this helps....

why do people snore? Is it harmful to stop snoring?if not what is the remedy?

    • ANSWER:
snoring is caused by vibrations of parts of the nose and soft palette of the throat at night the muscles that keep the airways open relax which causes the airway to narrow and make breathing noisier

it can be caused by loads of things
sleeping on your back your tongue falls back on your throat and blocks breathing
      alcohol relaxes the throat muscles
if your overweight the extra fat in the throat increases the pressure on the airway
if you smoke your airways will be inflamed and blocked by smoke so your more likely to snore
      it can be hereditary
a cold an allergy a damaged nose or jaw are some other reasons

      no its not harmful

to avoid snoring you could lose weight if you are overweight avoid alcohol and eating a few hours before bed sleep on your side use a few pillows to raise your head up a bit above the rest of your body so your airways arent blocked if its really bad you could get surgery

  35. QUESTION:
What is the best stop snoring home remedy?
I have had problems my whole life with snoring, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for the best stop snoring home remedy. It's really been bothering me recently, and I want it to stop already! Any help would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
You really should see your doctor and be tested for sleep apnea or nasal or throat polyps, or sinus troubles.

Some things to try at home:
      1. the nasal strips (Breathe Right is a brand name). Those can help with snoring and for nasal congestion.
      2. Don't sleep on your back. My husband snores, but i've noticed it doesn't happen if he is sleeping on his side. Prop with pillows to keep yourself from rolling onto your back.
      3. Raise the head of your bed up on blocks.
      4. Lose weight. If you have a thick neck, that will partially block your airway and cause snoring.
      5. Get more rest. My hubby tends to snore when he is more tired than usual.
      6. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. At night mucous membranes dry out and could lead to snoring.

And again, see your doctor to be checked.

  36. QUESTION:
What is the best way to stop snoring at night when sleeping?
Tell me the best 3 way to stop snoring at night when sleeping?

    • ANSWER:
      * Sleep on your side. Prop an extra pillow behind your back so you won't roll over. Try sleeping on a narrow sofa for a few nights to get accustomed to staying on your side.
      * Sew a large marble or tennis ball into a pocket on the back of your pajamas. The discomfort it causes will remind you to sleep on your side.
      * If you must sleep on your back, raise the head of the bed by putting bricks or blocks between the mattress and box springs. Or buy a wedge especially made to be placed between the mattress and box spring to elevate the head section. Elevating the head prevents the tongue from falling against the back of the throat.
      * If you are heavy, lose weight. Excess fatty tissue in the throat can cause snoring.
      * Don't drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal within 3 hours before bedtime. For some reason, both seem to foster snoring.
      * If necessary, take an antihistamine or decongestant before retiring to relieve nasal congestion (which can also contribute to snoring). [Note: Older men should check with their doctor before taking decongestants. Decongestants that have ephendrine can give older men urinary problems.]
      * Get rid of allergens in the bedroom such as dust, down filled (feathered) pillows and bed linen (this may also relieve nasal congestion).
      * Try over-the-counter "nasal strips". These keep the nostrils open and lift them up, keeping nasal passages unobstructed.

    • ANSWER:
If you know you have sleep apnea it means you have been tested by a doctor. Why on earth didn't he get you a CPAP machine. That took care of my problem. When you have sleep apnea you stop breathing in your sleep. It will stop the snoring and help you breath.

  41. QUESTION:
How can I get my dog to stop snoring or at least control it better?
She is a 13 month old Pit and Lab mix. She's been snoring ever since she was a puppy and now its to the point where you can't sleep. She doesn't snore every single night. A couple days might pass with her not snoring then she will start again, it just varies. Is there anything I can do about it?

    • ANSWER:
Is she overweight? If so, getting her down to a healthy weight will reduce it (but in some dogs may not eliminate it). When I adopted my Boston, she snored like a chainsaw and weighed close to 20 pounds. I got her down to an ideal weight (which for her ended up being 14.5 pounds), and she almost never snores now unless she gets herself in a strange position while she sleeps! If you aren't sure if she's overweight, put your hands on her ribcage behind each elbow. Apply very slight pressure and run them along the ribcage, moving towards the rear. You should easily feel the ribs with slight pressure. If you have to press harder, she's overweight. If she is in good condition, there's likely nothing you can do, it probably has to do with the structure of her sinuses.

  42. QUESTION:
y do ppl snore? & how does 1 stop snoring?
how do you get one to STOP snoring?

    • ANSWER:
Loose, flabby tissue in back of sinus and throat. Sometimes surgery can help by removing the excess tissue, sometimes the surgery does not work. If a person is diagnosed with sleep apnea, they are sometimes prescribed an airway regulator like C-Pap or B-Pap - and then you get to sleep with a machine running all night and they have to wear a mask on their face.

All I can say is I have lived with a bad snorer and it was horrible. Sleeping in separate rooms was the only peace I had.

  43. QUESTION:
What medicine can i take to stop snoring?
I snore really loud and my snoring can be heard by everybody in the entire house hold?

what medicine can i take that doesn't affect my asthma?

    • ANSWER:
It's not easy for me to admit, but sometimes I snore at night. It doesn't prevent me from getting a good night's sleep, but it keeps my husband awake. In fact, it drives him crazy! My problem is that I get congested at night, especially during allergy season. So, my method of treating it has been to combat my allergies and to find ways to keep my nasal passages clear at night. For me, that means using a menthol inhaler and placing a drop of peppermint essential oil on my pillow. If you snore, it may be for different reasons. The first thing you need to do is identify what they are. Once you do that, you will have a lot more success in finding a way to eliminate it.

      Causes for Snoring
      Step 1:
Snoring is caused when your nasal passages are narrowed or blocked. There can be a variety of reasons for this. Here's a list: Congestion Colds Allergies Overweight Sleep apnea Alcohol Muscle relaxant drugs Drugs that promote drowsiness Your physical traits such as a deviated septum or large tonsils Asthma Sleeping on your back

      Step 2:
See a doctor to find a cause. If you snore, you may want to see a doctor. Even though most cases can be explained, there are some occasions where they indicate a more serious medical problem that may need treatment such as sleep apnea or asthma. In other words, they will help you find the cause and provide you with some solutions. For example, if you have a deviated septum, your doctor may recommend corrective surgery. If you need help losing weight, your doctor could provide you with some helpful advice. Doctors are trained to assist you in finding a cause for the things that ail you. If your snoring is prolonged or severe it can affect your health by interrupting your sleep patterns. By doing this you are taking a positive step to assisting your health.

      Step 3:
Get rid of congestion. Even if you determine that your snoring is caused by something other than congestion, keeping your nasal passages as clear as possible will help. You can do this in a number of ways. Here are some of the best ways I've found that can help: * Take a decongestant. There are many choices--some are herbal or homeopathic remedies and others need to be purchased at the drug store. I personally don't like to take drug store remedies because I am not able to sleep when I take them. * Use a menthol inhaler. This is my favorite option. The menthol works for several hours and I find that when I use it, I don't snore. * Essential oils. If I can't find my inhaler or want a change of pace, I place a few drops of essential on my pillow. My favorites are peppermint, rosemary and tea tree.

      Step 4:
Control your allergies. Allergies are another cause for snoring. If you control your allergies you can decrease your chances of snoring. You can either take over the counter medicine to control them, get a prescription from your doctor, or use natural remedies. Vitamin C, green tea, grape seed extract, and stinging nettle are my favorite natural allergy medications.

      Step 5:
Control your weight. Being overweight is another common cause for snoring. If you keep your weight down or lose weight, that may help eliminate the snoring. You can choose to lose weight any method that will work for you. Just remember that slow, gradual weight loss is usually longer lasting.

How to stop snoring at night?
I cannot seem to stop snoring at night. I've tried a couple of different products, but none of them seem to work. Anyone have any suggestions, my wife is ready to move onto the couch.

    • ANSWER:
The best thing you can do is to start working out and try to lose some weight. It is said that snoring at night is caused by fatty tissue in the throat, and this traps some mucus and creates a pocket of saliva. Nasty, I know, but its the truth.

You can also try using a product called snore zip, which prevents this mucus from building up at night and will help you stop snoring. Check out link below for reviews. I believe they have a free trial, my friend said he used it and it dramatically reduced his snoring.

  50. QUESTION:
How can I get my boyfriend to stop snoring?
We have tried breathe right strips which didnt work and was a huge waste of money. I wear earplugs but lately its been getting worse and I think its because of his allergies (and he wont take a clariton when i freakin tell him to). He will sleep on his side and he will still snore, but of course its worse on his back. Any other suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
      A few tips here:

@ How you snore reveals why you snore:

#Closed-mouth snoring may indicate a problem with the tongue.

#Open-mouth snoring may be related to the tissues in your throat.

#Snoring when sleeping on back is probably mild – improved sleep habits and lifestyle changes may be effective cures.

#Snoring in all sleep positions can mean snoring is more severe and may require a more comprehensive treatment.

      @ Troubleshoot to stop snoring:

#Lose weight. Losing even a little bit of weight can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease snoring.

#Clear nasal passages. Having a stuffy nose makes inhalation difficult and creates a vacuum in your throat, which in turn leads to snoring.

#Quit smoking. If you smoke, your chances of snoring are high.

#Establish regular sleep patterns. Create a bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it. Hitting the sack in a routine way together can promote better sleep and therefore minimize snoring.

#Keep bedroom air moist with a humidifier. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat.

#Reposition. Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. (Tip: go pillow-free or try a specially designed pillow to make sure your neck muscles are not crimped).

@ If the self-helps aren’t silencing your noisy bedroom, don’t abandon hope. Medical treatments could make all the difference.
