Learn How To Cure Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea Obesity

If you or someone you love has sleep apnea, obesity may be a contributing factor. Maybe you are kept awake by the horrendous snoring, snorting or get worried because sometimes your spouse sounds like they are choking. These are all signs and symptoms of sleep apnea and you should encourage them to go to the doctor or get yourself to the doctor if this is you.

The way obesity comes into play with sleep apnea is that the fatty tissue that has built up around the neck affects the neck muscles and soft palate and even the little flap in the back of your throat called the uvula and when you go to sleep all the muscles relax and the fatty tissue relaxes also and closes off your airway. This is dangerous because at some point you may just stop breathing all together.

This is called respiratory failure and it is fatal. This does not happen frequently but it does happen, the best advice you can get is to get the treatment you need so you do not have to worry about it happening to you. Talk to your doctor before it is too late. Sudden death can occur at any time.

The next best piece of advice I can give you about sleep apnea obesity is to lose the excess weight. did you know if you lose just 10% of your total body fat you can decrease the seriousness of your sleep apnea by 30% and it just goes up from there. The more you lose the better off you will be and when you get to your ideal weight or even just meet your weight loss goal you may not have sleep apnea anymore.

How do you know if you have sleep apnea? Well, there are ways to tell that you might if you do not have someone to tell you you snore. Do you ever wake up and your mouth is so dry you feel like you have to pry your tongue from the roof of your mouth with a pry bar? Are you always tired? Do you need more coffee than usual to stay awake during the day? Could be sleep apnea is affecting the quality of your sleep and your life.

If you and your doctor agree that you may have sleep apnea, he or she will refer you to the respiratory care center of the clinic or hospital and get you fitted for a CPAP machine and mask. This will take some getting used to because you will have to wear the mask when you are sleeping. If you also make a lifestyle change and start to lose the weight you probably will not have to use the machine for too long. It all depends on how quickly you can lose the weight.

As soon as you lose the weight sleep apnea obesity will be a thing of the past and you can rest easy and get back to a normal way of life. Look to your local or internet vitamin store for remedies to aid in sleep and weight loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Sleep Apnea / Obesity link?
I'm just curious if anyone out there was once overweight then got sleep apnea.
Then after getting healthy and fit (lost weight) the sleep apnea subsided?

    • ANSWER:
This is very common, and as one person stated already, as you gain weight, especially around the neck, the extra tissues tend to narrow the space in the throat. As you go to sleep and your muscles relax, your jaw tends to drop back, pushing your tongue and soft tissues back against the back of the throat, or closer to it. This significantly narrows the airway. Snoring is due to the air passing thru this narrowed passage and the soft tissues and the tongue vibrate. At times the airway will become completely blocked and you have apnea.

Anyway, the more weight you gain, the larger your neck becomes, the more susceptible your are to this condition and one of the most effective ways to reduce snoring and apnea is to lose weight.

I hope this helps answer your question.

  2. QUESTION:
Other than obesity, is sleep apnea a symptom of any other underlying conditions?

    • ANSWER:
      Sure, hypothyroidism comes to mind.

  3. QUESTION:
Is sleep apnea a result of obesity, or is obesity a cause of sleep apnea.?
My doctor thinks I may have sleep apnea and wants me to be evaluated through a sleep test. Well, my insurance won't pick that cost up, and it's an expensive evaluation. Looking at the machines available, it seems a much more cost effective route to pick up a machine, and if there are no perceived benefits, then just put it away. There are several machines that are much more affordable, compared to the cost of the test.

That issue aside . . . I am in fact overweight. And my neck is thick (always has been, even when I was slender and in great physical shape). So taking into consideration the neck thickness issue. I think my most important hurdle is to get my weight down and manage it, along with a healthy diet, and an exercise regimen.

I realize sleep apnea has a detrimental effect on one's health, and is said to lead to obesity. But from my understanding most people with sleep apnea are in fact overweight. So is weight a larger contributor to sleep apnea . . or is sleep apnea a larger contributor to being overweight?

I just feel that correcting my unhealthy life choices would be much more beneficial, reduce my chances for heart attack, and other related problems, and the lack of excess weight should relieve a lot of burden on my body including help my sleep.

I realize that it isn't necessarily one or the other . . that a better lifestyle is what one should always shoot for. I just feel the sleep test is an unnecessary cost as I can buy the machine cheaple in comparison to the cost of the test, and also, if i were to consider taking the test . . wouldn't it make far better sense to get my weight down to a healthy level before shelling out the $$ for a test that will be swayed by my weight in the first place.

Any flaws in my thoughts on this subject?

    • ANSWER:
Which came first - the chicken or the egg? This is a hard question to answer, as many people with sleep apnea are overweight, but people with undiagnosed sleep apnea feel the need to eat more due to sleep deprivation and lack of energy.
I have many many customers with sleep apnea who are not overweight, and I myself have sleep apnea and am not overweight. Most sleep apnea is caused by a small jaw. It is my opinion that obese people may be the first to be diagnosed due to being unhealthy, and possibly having other health issues.
Unfortunately, it's not usually possible to cure sleep apnea through weight loss, as even if the weight is shed, the fat will remain in the neck.
Sleep apnea is a serious 'condition' so do your best to get that sleep test. Good Luck!

  4. QUESTION:
My hubby saved my life, how can I help him save his from obesity and sleep apnea?
Sometimes I kid around and say I'm all kinds of broken, but that was how I felt when he became my friend. I was in a verbally abusive relationship, although he never hit me, it probably would have hurt less if he had. Overweight, bi-polar disorder, PCoS, and more problems on top of that. I was ready for suicide, just to get life over with since I was that unhappy.

My new friend helped me understand that although I had some problems, they weren't worth giving up on everything, including letting my family down. He became my best friend for the next three years, then he moved from Canada to the US to be with me. We ended getting married 3 weeks later.

When I meet him he was an online friend. I didn't know everything about him as far as physical attributes, but I really didn't care. Before he flew down he told me he was a heavy set guy, and I was ok with that. He reminds me of a huge teddy bear now.

My problem is this. When he moved here he was overweight, I don't know how many pounds he was, but he was wearing a 2x shirt... Since then we've been married for 1 year and 8 months (today actually, how funny.) and he has gained another 2 shirt sizes. My husband now weighs in at about 360 at 5'8". I had sleep problems so I did a sleep study, I thought "well heck, he has sleep problems too, we'll both go". They diagnosed him with Sleep Apnea, he stops breathing about 200 times an hour. I was terrified for his life, if he stops breathing that many times an hour, what is my promise that he will start breathing again? Well now to say the least he has a breathing machine that helps him at night. He hates it, but he wears it for me.

We went and saw our General Practitioner. He said that with Sleep Apnea, if it's untreated the heart enlarges, and if it goes untreated he could have died within a matter of 3-5 years, if it he was lucky.

My husband's problems with weight started when he started gaming online. Mom is a superb cook and made something like 6 course meals on a daily basis, as a stay at home mom. I think this is around when he hit 22ish. (He's 30 now) We still game online... for a couple of months after seeing the doctor we walked 2 miles every day, when it started raining heavily in the area for a few weeks we stopped. Then I tried getting gym memberships for us, we went for 3 weeks... then he would refuse to go.

I've done everything. I've cried, I've voiced my opinion, commented about how his shirts occasionally show his tummy poking out, tried putting him on an expensive diet, showed him that I’m willing to support and work out too, and taken him to the gym or just randomly walking. For the life of me I can not get him to take more interest in his weight. I'm heartbroken that he isn't taking this matter more seriously. My parents and brother are concerned, what's the likeliness that he will survive the next ten years at this rate, what will happen to me when he’s gone. He’s literally the light of my life; he’s what keeps me stable.

How do you push someone to understand what they are doing to themselves? I'm overweight by about 30-50lbs, but since we've gotten married I've a few pounds, and kept it off.

It's hard doing things together, shopping for clothes, being intimate. He wonders why I pull back, and I've tried telling him why, but he doesn't understand, or doesn't want to. My last thought is to send him back home to his family, leave him and maybe he'll understand how much I need him to be healthy. But then I don't even know if he'll take action.

I know my husband is lazy, I am too to an extent, but he takes extremely good care of me. He has a hard time finding a job because he’s an immigrant to the US, so now he’s attending college to get additional training in his career. He’s not doing nothing all day. He’s studying, going to school, doing labs, and yes some gaming too. There’s no harm in that I think… It’s how we spend time together and keep within a budget.

Note: I don’t have insurance; I lost my full time job that had benefits. Since then I had to take the first job I could get, which is only part time. Before when we had the insurance he didn’t find the idea of weight loss pills acceptable, he thought they could cause permanent damage. Now that we don’t have insurance he’s thinking that MAYBE he’ll eventually take them. I don’t know if he’s saying it because he knows I can’t afford to get them for him, or if he was serious. My sister in law’s extended family has a doctor in it, he’s from Mexico. He offered to bring medication to my husband to help stimulate his metabolism. My husband said NO without a second thought. He said medications from Mexico weren’t safe. My brother argues that the same medical companies make drugs all across the world, but he just said no, and left it at that.

Sorry. I know this is long, but thank you for taking the time to read it, and possibly help me.
As a response to my first comment. My hubby sometimes says that I approach him at the wrong times, IE: He's had a bad day. Other times he says he knows he needs to try, but just doesn't. He's even mentioned that if he cooks diet foods that I don't always like them, and that's disappointing for him. I've offered to cook my own meals, so that way he won't feel as though he's being unappreciated, but then he comments that he feels useless since his daily tasks are less than mine.

    • ANSWER:
It hurts to see someone who's helped you gradually kill themselves with constant suicide, especially whenever they don't see the issue, or at least have no real desire to rectify it. There's only so much you can do or say to him. I don't know if counseling is an option, I know it's expensive, with or without insurance. You've tried talking to him, sneaking in exercise... etc. You're a good woman for trying. I don't know if I missed it or not, but what's his reaction when you tell him flat-out how you feel about his condition? Is he concerned in response, indifferent, thinks you're overreacting, etc.? You'd think he'd at least humor you and give it a shot.

Addendum: Sorry, took me a while to get back to this question. His responses are... I don't know. My mind goes to extreme measures as being a solution, but I've never been in your position verbatim, so I don't feel completely adequate in giving you advice. Whatever you so choose, I wish you and he luck in the end-result.

  8. QUESTION:
My overweight 4yo son just had his adenoids and tonsils removed. He had sleep apnea. Will he lose weight?
I have heard that sleep apnea is a cause of obesity in children.

    • ANSWER:
My experience is with adults sleep apnea using CPAP machines, Using the forced air machines to open the airways during sleep does tend to loose weight! The actual operations themselves will tend to loose weight because of lack of appetite from throat pains! Activity will be the only way that your son will loose weight! Adenoids and tonsils were removed on my sister and I when we were young pre teen we lost weight only because we could not eat solid food! Ice cream only sounds like fun stuff for so long! It gets Old FAST!

WE were in fact getting too old for the operation! Your son probably got over it within less than a week!

Keep him active and he will loose weight ! Life stile change ! Believe it or not I lost about 20 or so pounds when I went on the CPAP breathing machine alone! To treat my sleep apnea . This treatment started about October of 2005 , I am 60 but I truly feel like I am 40 now!

If your husband snores you should try to get him to a sleep clinic! Maybe even you! This machine is wonderful! It is God's gift to my wife! And to me!

I just wish I had gone earlier to a lab and gotten this thing! I would of been a terror! It has given me a whole new life!

Im very scared because i read that this can kill you over time someone please help me someone even the slightest bit of info ill take.

    • ANSWER:
First of all, take a deep breath. Make an appointment for you family Dr and explain your symptoms. He/she will take it from there. Long term untreated apnea can cause issues with your health. However, it is long term; like years and years. The test for sleep apnea that is usually used is a simple procedure where you place a probe (like a little brace) over your finger. The machine is the size of a large deck of cards. The box records your oxygen level. When it is red by the computer the results go to your Dr and he goes from there. Usually this is done over the night time.

  11. QUESTION:
I can't get a diagnois for my 3 yr old daughter any ideas? Please help!?
we have been to ortho, genetics, behavior and neurolgists. Presents with-leg pain accomanied by occasional limited mobility associated with the pain, speech delay, regulatory & sensory disorder, acid reflux. sleep apnea, obesity(61lbs.) Height(104cm) head(53cm), behavior problems, numerous cafe-au-lait spots(not neurofibromaosis), palpebral fissures slightly upslanting, synophrys of the eyebrows, broad nasal bridge with epicanthal folds tip is slightly anteverted, long lashes, mild nasal mucosal edema, ears normal, chest & cardiac normal, generalized joint hyperextenibility and soft muscles, bilateral four finger lines, right proximal palmar crease is hypoplastic, lumbar lordosis, knock knee, neurologically tone decreased, mild dysmorphic appearance ,hirsutism, high arched palate, excessive thirst & urination. Already ruled out- Fragile X, Prader willie,DiGeorge, Angelman, and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. Anyone have any ideas? No one will work with her behavior until diagnosis. Please help!!

    • ANSWER:
Has you been offered a neuropsychology evaluation? It won't identify a physical syndrome per se, but it can identify brain-based behavior abnormalities (what areas of the brain may be contributing to behavior) and give a diagnosis to the behavior and from there, guide treatments. (Having a diagnosis also facilitates additional funding for kids with special needs)

If you go this route - make sure you find a pediatric neuropsychologist - some work mostly with adults.

Good luck - you're obviously thorough parents with your daughter's best interests in mind!

  12. QUESTION:
How do I convince my son that his inductive reasoning is flawed ?
My seventeen year old son tends to use the past to predict future events. He thinks that if something did not happen yesterday, it will not happen tomorrow. He especially applies this to death (his own or someone elses) and the Second Coming of Christ. He has an uncle who has been very sick and has for years kept telling us (my son included) that is time was very short. My brother claims to have an aneurysm since 1999 which has never been treated, congestive heart failure, severe asthma, cellulitis of the legs, sleep apnea, obesity (well over 300 pounds). My son now no longer believes him and also believes he may be somewhat of a hpochondriac.

    • ANSWER:
hi, sorry , but your brother does sound like a hypochondriac, and really since the age of seven has listened to it-thats more than half of his own life., so yes your brother has impacted on his thoughtsthat'sis now turning into an adult and thats one of the things in his life that will effect his reasoning. i can understand why he does not believe him.

  13. QUESTION:
Why would an evil entity want to give false alarms about impending deaths of three people ?
A close friend of mine claims an aneurysm was discovered on an X-ray in 1999 after a car wreck. He is 65 years old. He has not had surgery or treatment for it. If this is true, how is it that it hasn't disected. I had a cousin half his age (32 years old) who died immediately from an anuerysm. My friend also had gotten "messages from God" in the past that he was going to pass away in a certain month, which didn't happen. He says his being here after that are "extensions from God". He also told me the Lord was going to take me home to Heaven by age 47 (now I'm 48). Aslo, he told me that God was going to bring judgment on a handy man in March 2009 that had been stealing and threatening him, which did not happen either.

He used to call me on the telephone every night and we talked for about three to four hours (not always about my church) and I was getting very annoyed.

He also has had for many years:

    Congestive heart failure
    Severe asthma
    Cellulitis of the legs
    Sleep apnea
    Obesity (well over 300 pounds)

Given all these conditions at once, how has he survived for so long unless it's for the reason I stated? Since 2002 he had kept telling me his time was "short" until two years ago. He has stopped telling me that because he knows I won't believe him anymore. Am I wrong in being skeptical about his sicknesses and thinking he is either a hypochondriac or being deceived by an evil spirit.

    • ANSWER:
God will never talk to any man or woman in this manner. Read the bible to learn and understand the truth.
It’s not safe to listen to man’s way’s they are never God’s ways.

  14. QUESTION:
How can an untreated aneurysm last for over eleven years without bursting ?

  15. QUESTION:
Is God keeping this person around because I'm going to the wrong church ?
A close friend of mine claims an aneurysm was discovered on an X-ray in 1999 after a car wreck. He has not had surgery or treatment for it. If this is true, how is it that it hasn't disected. He also had gotten "messages from God" in the past that he was going to pass away in a certain month, which didn't happen.

I am going to a church he considers to be legalistic and has been trying to get me out of it for years. If his sicknesses are genuine, is God keeping him around because of this? He used to call me on the telephone every night and we talked for about three to four hours (not always about my church) and I was getting annoyed (see Proverbs 25:17).

He also has had for many years:

    Congestive heart failure

    • ANSWER:
I believe that, until our purpose is fulfilled, we won't die. Whether your friend's purpose is getting you into a new church or not, I can't answer. he probably can't, either.
People can live for years with aneurysms, as well as the other health issues you mentioned. he should be taking better care of himself, losing weight and making the most of his life, but maybe to him, trying to "help" you is more important.
Ask yourself if you feel good about your church and what it is accomplishing. Do you love to get up and go to it? Do you feel stronger and closer to God after services? Does it and the people there encourage you to be a better person and a better Christian? If not, then this may not be the right church for you.
The answer to which church you should attend lies between you and God. Ask for His guidance. remember Proverbs 3:5-6 and don't lean on your own understanding, but allow God to direct your paths. Few people here on R&S care about you in any manner, so take the issue to the One who truly does. he won't lead you wrong!

  16. QUESTION:
Is God making my sick friend linger because I'm going to the wrong church ?
A close friend of mine claims an aneurysm was discovered on an X-ray in 1999 after a car wreck. He is 66 years old. He has not had surgery or treatment for it. If this is true, how is it that it hasn't disected. I had a cousin half his age (32 years old) who died immediately from an anuerysm. Severe asthma
    Cellulitis of the legs

    Obesity (well over 300 pounds)
    Verigo
    Tumor in lung found recently

Given all these conditions at once, how has he survived for so long unless it's for the reason I stated? Since 2002 he had kept telling me his time was "short" until two years ago. He has stopped telling me that because he knows I won't believe him. Am I wrong in being skeptical about his sicknesses and thinking he is a hypochondriac, or that it's my church attendance as the reason God is keeping him here?
ADD: How could he survive so long with obesisty plus all the others combined?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, let's not put the blame on God. This guy who told you this doesn't know when he is going to die. God will not give him a message like that. Where you go to church shouldn't be his business. That is between you and the Lord. Sounds like your friend is the one going legalistic about things. Often times we get carried away with thinking that we know so much when in actuality it is our imagination going rampant. Peace is the link between us and the Lord in knowing what we should be doing. He will give us peace if we are doing the right thing. There is nothing like it. Know the Word and what it says and you will gain much more peace and joy and knowledge of God's Kingdom.

Edit: I forgot to add that I have someone very close to me that has had an aneurysm for nearly 40 years and is alive and well and suffering no ill effects.

  17. QUESTION:
His obesity is ruining our relationship!?
I'm at wits end here. I do love my fiance, but his weight is ruining everything. He has gained 60lbs over the past two years and just keeps gaining more. I think is ridiculous - but it happens. Problem is, he won't do anything about it. And just to put out there, no he hasn't gained weight due to any underlying medical issues. He's simply gained weight due to not leading a healthy lifestyle. (which he lead when we met) In fact, his weight gain is actually CAUSING medical problems. He was a little chubby when I met him - so this 60 lb. weight gain has him tipping the scales of being moderately obese. (according to his doctor) His obesity has caused him to get obstructive sleep apnea, as well as high blood pressure & low testosterone levels. (not sure if the low testosterone levels are specifically caused by him being obese - but the doctor says that weight loss might bring his levels back around normal)Now we are currently waiting to see if he has fertility issues due to the low testosterone levels. To me that is just the icing on the cake. My biggest goal & desire in life is to be a mother. And now I feel like his obesity is starting to invade in our relationship. I've just gotten to the point that I'm over him being fat and I'm getting to the point that I'm over him. Him being fat has ruined our relationship! We can no longer go to the beach because he feels self conscious, we've had to start buying more food because he eats so much, and not to mention is has completely destroyed our sex life. His low testosterone level has made him uninterested in sex - as well as my sexual advances. In a way I'm happy about this because the thought of him crushing me during sex or having to grab onto his fat rolls simply disgusts me. I'm not claiming to be perfect, so do not take this as me just bashing him. But to get it out there - yes I am in shape, and yes I lead a healthy lifestyle. I have tried everything to get him to follow suit, to no avail. He refuses to go to the gym because he feels like "people are staring at him", he refuses to walk or jog because it's too hot outside (we live in FL), he refuses to diet because he says he doesn't want to be starving all the time, & he won't go see a nutritionist or dietician because he claimes he works too much to fit it into his schedule. His doctor has given him a CPAP machine to help with his sleep apnea, which he does not use - because "it's annoying". And he has refused any help from the doctor in referring him to weight loss programs or the like again to his "busy work schedule". Simply put - he refuses to do anything about his weight, but expects everyone just to deal with him being fat. I have tried the whole "we can exercise" and "we can diet" - which hasn't worked one bit. I have tried not bringing junk in the house, he just goes and buys it himself. I have tried everything, nothing has worked. His sleep apnea has caused us to sleep in seperate rooms (due to me not sleeping well next to his snoring), we have no sex life (it has literally been over 4 months), and our electric bill & grocery bill has gone up due to him always being "hot" and eating too much. Our relationship has dwindled... I love him, but I'm ready to give up. Has anyone been through this or have any advice? (serious only) Just to add, we are not married and have no kids.
**And I do agree that if a woman does this same thing she is just as guilty. Anyone (man or woman) who becomes this unhealthy and overweight due to pure laziness is wrong. Those who have valid medical causes (ie thyroid, being pregnant, etc) have some room to stand on. But they're ailment definitely shouldn't become a crutch or excuse to continue to be unhealthy.
Before people jump my case for being a cold hearted b*tch. I do love him, if I didn't I wouldn't have tried in the first place. I would have left him at the first signs of weight gain. To say that I've never loved him or even that I despise him (as one person so kindly put) is ludicrous. What I despise is the fact that he shows a lack of concern for our relationship - and our future. I despise the fact that he'd rather cram a ho-ho down his throat and play video games than do something to make himself healthier. And I despise the fact that there is nothing else I can do. Which is why I'm asking for advice - not insults.

    • ANSWER:
I'm just an outsider looking in, but it sounds to me like both of you need some help. First, I think if you love someone, you love someone. No matter what they "look" like. When my husband and I first started dating, his weight was at about 135. Now he runs between 185-210 depending on what time of year it is. I love him just the same as I always have. I have to say, we are 10 years in, and our sex life is still running on a full throttle. I do think that his lack of a sex drive could be a big problem. I also think that sleeping in searate bedrooms would definitely put a wedge in your relationship. It does sound like he has gotten lazy. His lack of willingness to even try to lose weight is sad. Especially since it is affecting his health. People tend to get comfortable with each other after a period of time and start to let themselves go. I do think you need to give him an ultimatum. Either he starts taking care of himself or your gone. Not because he is "fat" and your not attracted to him. But because you love him and would like to have him around for another 20 or 30 years. Your definitely not in a healthy relationship figuratively and literally speaking. Tell him your going to leave him if he doesnt change his ways, and voice all your concerns you have told us about. The kid thing and his health and the sex. Hopefully that will put a spark under his ass. If it doesnt, then he obviously doesnt love you like he should and you need to end the relationship. Good Luck.

  19. QUESTION:
What health problems are needed in order to qualify for gastric bypass surgery?
What types of health problems are needed to qualify to have gastric bypass surgery? Do you only qualify if you have severe health problems caused by this or could you qualify if you have smaller health problems like knee arthritis & breathing problems? Most of my family is obese and have heart disease, sleep apnea. Would they take that into consideration? My sister had gastric bypass surgery with a starting weight at 208 and is down to 128. I don't think she had any medical problems due to her obesity.

    • ANSWER:
Usually you have to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more to qualify for gastric bypass. If you have a BMI of over 35, sometimes you can qualify if you have significant co-morbidities such as diabetes or sleep apnea. First and foremost, "they" look at how morbid obesity is affecting you, however, your family history may be taken into account, if close relatives are morbidly obese and have health problems relating to obesity.

I am a 34 year old male who suffers from sleep apnea and obesity and also has lower than average testosterone level. I have been advised that I should have MRI done to ensure that there is no potential tumor. The only problem it is being recommended at the beginning of calendar year so it is 100% paid out of pocket. Still recommend having it done to be safe than sorry??

  21. QUESTION:
Would this be an effective way to combat Food Abuse?
Using government's already available information, take the number of people in a household and calculate the recommended number of calories they should consume in a week.

When food items are purchased, they will be recorded (like cold medicine purchases currently are).

Once your weekly limit is reached, you can not purchase anymore food.

The possession of more food than your family needs would be grounds for immediate arrest.

Of course, items purchased at restaurants would count toward your weekly calorie allowance.

Given that almost four times as many people die from Food Abuse as from Drug Abuse, it is obvious that something needs to be done to protect citizens from their poor choices.

The health care costs of obese people is a burden we all share (just like when people have a wreck on a motorcycle and aren't wearing a helmet, or in a car and aren't wearing a seat belt).

Also, obese people suffer from narcolepsy (sudden irresistable drowsiness) brought about by sleep apnea (an abnormality of sleep exclusive to the obese), which causes daytime sleepiness and the inevitable automobile accidents that sleeping while driving causes.

Can you think of other ways to protect people from themselves?

Please talk to your children about the dangers of Food Abuse.

    Obesity destroys lives.

    Obesity is a KILLER!
Facade: We could use the same ID we use for tracking our cold medicine purchases: Our Driver's License. There would be no need for any more beauracracy. The same people who track cold-medicine purchases could monitor food purchases. The whole system is automated anyway.

The technology and personnel are already available . . . and in place.
Missy: you don't care if people harm themselves, and possibly, you, due to their destructive behaviors?

Yeah. I think YOU need to get it right, before YOU spout off. Ya know what I'm sayin'? I think ya do.

    • ANSWER:
it just almost makes sense. However I think the major flaw in your presentation is "Protect people from themselves" The motorcycle analogy is a good try to. Given all the starving people in the world, I would rather put a limit on food waste. Maybe some censor in peoples trash cans. I have to say the logistics of your rationing would be incredibly hard to do. It would take an entirely new gov't department and ID cards for everyone. For the sake of argument it's debatable, but people of all political parties would object to the cose and invasion of privacy. It's almost Puritanical, what to do with all the other guilty pleasures e.g. alcohol, cigarettes, every recreational sport has risks and environmental consequences. Last of all is most obesity is a life choice, I think excessive TV destroys more brains cells than obesity. Many hold that opinion. I'm sitting here on Yahoo not excercising and being mostly silly. You can't dictate morals on this subject.

    Obesity = brain shrinkage = stupidity ....

"The researchers found that all of these OBESITY indicators were inversely
associated with total brain volume - that is, the higher any indicator was, the SMALLER THE BRAIN VOLUME -
and that the association between abdominal fat and brain volume was the strongest of all.
Waist-to-hip ratio was also found to be associated with increased temporal horn volume,
    independently of other obesity indicators.
The temporal horn is a part of the ventricular system; its volume is known to increase with age,
and in conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease, depression and schizophrenia.
Enlargement of the temporal horn invariably involves a reduction in the volume of temporal lobe structures such as
the hippocampus, and thus is closely associated with MEMORY IMPAIRMENTS.

Fatty tissue, also known as adipose tissue, produces hormones on its own that could play a role in promoting cancer cells.
It also has been shown to produce chronic, low-grade inflammation in the body.

    And

    are cheap additives harmful?

is it the high fructose corn syrup? msg? is it the toxins in the meat?

    • ANSWER:
One good way is to eliminate the government subsidies on farming and the FDA ran food industry.

They don't make food naturally anymore, they practically soak everything we eat in chemicals, additives, subsidies, and etc.

Almost everything in the market these days is high in sodium, subsidized materials, and chemicals which is exactly why America is so unhealthy.

Good food is twice as expensive as the shit grown on farm subsidies.

  29. QUESTION:
Do I have to see my Therapist?
Here's the story, I am seeing about 4-5 doctors, due to my anxiety disorder, sleep apnea, and obesity. I have been seeing my Therapist for a few months and I have always hated him ever since cause of his stupidity and always changing subject when we talk about my fears and etc. I also see my Psychiatrist before my Therapist, so I know my Psychiatrist longer and she was the one who recommended me to see the Therapist. I finally got my courage up to not see my Therapist anymore and reject his treatment(which is only talking about retarded stuff like his family, his diet? and his parents and his near death experience?!). And today he just called my mom saying if I don't keep seeing him, he would report me to the "higher-ups" and the government? about my "severe illness"(which appearantly is Anxiety disorder). and he said he would sue my mom for MEDICAL negligence -.-. and also he said if I don't see him, he won't allow me to see my psychiatrist who supplies me with medication, when my psychiatrist was the one who recommended me to see him...

So what should I do? Should I keep seeing him or not? Because if I'm not mistaken, the Patients Bill of Rights says that Patients have the right to reject treatment and not see the doctor. Oh yea, also during a few sessions, he told my mom to quit her job when my family is low income and shes the only one who supplies the money, just so she "keep an eye" on me...

Also, can he really "sue" my mom and report to the "government/higher-ups" to force me to go to a clinic and force treatment on me? Cause I believe that's some bullshit he's making up and im getting fed up with it cause he's talking like of crap to my mom.
My mom wasn't the one who was telling me it, the Therapist was telling me it when I decided not to see him again, by the way I'm 18.

    Increased mortality risk
Relationship problems with a bed partner
Obesity - (The link between obesity and sleep is an interesting one as lack of sleep can cause weight gain by increasing hunger and affecting metabolism, and extra weight can cause sleep disorders such as apnea which cause sleep deprivation.)

So my main question is, am i effected in the long term by the little sleep i had, and will they have a lasting effect, so will sleeping more regularly cause the long term effects from lack of sleep to diminish in the end or is the damage done and unrepairable?
No comprende, kurt. The answer i'm looking for is whether or not i will have the effects of lack of sleep from previous times even with newly better habits

  31. QUESTION:
Would this be a good method of combating Food Abuse?

Also, obese people suffer from narcolepsy (sudden irresistable drowsiness) which can be brought about by sleep apnea (an abnormality of sleep almost exclusive to the obese), which causes daytime sleepiness and the inevitable automobile accidents that sleeping while driving causes.

Can you think of other ways to protect people from themselves?

    • ANSWER:
it's the medication that is causing your obesity. Ask your doctor to take you of the med, and try something different. Eating and exercising should really help, but it does take time. Get of the med, and keep dieting/exercising daily, & you'll be normal in no time =)
      I hope you get better!

  34. QUESTION:
    Severe Obesity?
My mom has type II diabetes. She weighs approximately 356 pounds. I'm really worried about her. She has severe sleep apnea, also. I, also, am rather overweight. I have been doing the Atkin's diet for 2 weeks now... Don't plan on stopping anytime soon, either.
Anyway, what are some suggestions to help my mom get on a diet. She is such a pretty person but coming from overweight people, please tell me what would motivate YOU to lose weight to become healthier. And how should I talk to my mom?

    • ANSWER:
The best thing you can do for your Mom is give her your unconditional love and support, no matter what her weight is. Don't judge her for her weight, don't harp about it or suggest weight loss surgery or anything like that. You will only make her feel down, possibly even depressed. Depression is very common among diabetes. She doesn't need anyone to tell her to lose weight. She's quite aware of that fact.

She probably feels very guilty about her weight, but there may not be much that she can do about it at this stage. Insulin resistence causes weight gain, which in turn causes more insulin resistence. Its a viscous cycle and its really hard to beat, especially if you have joint problems, which become pretty common at that weight. Diabetes makes it nearly impossible to lose weight, especailly if she's on insulin. However, insulin may be necessary to control the diabetes.

If she can take metformin, it may help her slowly lose a little weight, which would be great for her health. Metformin can cause some digestive problems, but I have read from several people on it, that eating yogurt with active cultures can help with that aspect of it. She should look for one without sugar. Her doctor would have to prescribe the metformin for her and it has to be started slowly, on a low dose and gradually adjusted to a level that helps keep blood sugar lower. Weight loss is a side effect of it but it doesn't work for everyone.

If your mom could get her sleep apnea treated with a Bipap machine, it would really help with the fatigue and her diabetes.
She should also have her thyroid checked. It might be low, this is quite common in Type 2 diabetics. Untreated hypothyroidism can make diabetes worse.

Your mom should be on a reduced carb diet, with maybe 90 to 130 carbs per day total. Her diabetes dietician will advise her on what to eat, etc. She should learn to calculate NET carbs.

Because you are also overweight, and have diabetes in your family, you should ask your doctor to do a glucose tolerance test, and an HbA1c. Its quite possible that you will get diabetes -- you may even have it now and not know it.

Most people have it for about 8 years before they get diagnosed. This is because with Type 2, the symptoms are often silent and you don't get noticable symptoms until there is actual nerve damage. See this blog for links to pages that list the symptoms.

      http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-NbDgUzQhfrJTXdmg.DfXS.Tx

There are also links on how to test your blood sugar to get it under control - see Jennifer's page link

There are also some good books listed there and links with a lot more info about diabetes. Check out them all.

Instead of trying to motivate your mom to lose weight, try to get her involved in some mild forms of exercise, so she can be more active. She does need to be careful at that weight, not to injure her knees, or stress her heart. She should get her doctor's approval before adding any exercise. Walking at her own pace, and exercising in a pool would be less stress on her joints. Also lifting small free weights will build up her arm strength. Any exercise is better than none, and it all helps bring your blood sugar down too.

Just going for a short walk every day would help. She needs to walk at her own pace, which will be slow at first, but she may be able to gradually increase it a bit and in crease the distance a little at a time. She may need to stop often and catch her breath, it just depends on how out of shape she is. Be patient!

Also learn as much as you can about low carb cooking, to help her stay on track with her blood sugar.

Get the South Beach Diet book and the
South Beach Quick and Easy Cookbook.

See the other books listed on the blog too, to educate yourself. Give them to her if she doesn't already have them. The one by Gretchen Becker is the best one to start with. She should read it if she hasn't already. You should read it too.

Tell your mom she's not alone, that you'll give her your support in anything she wants to do to get better. Give her lots of love, lots of hugs, and cook and eat low carb with her. Ask her to do the low or moderate carb diet with your or at least eat the dishes you will learn to cook. Don't focus on the weight or her diabetes, try to make life fun and less stressful.

Help your mom focus on getting healthier rather than losing weight. Its a more acheivable goal and less depressing and stressful. Help her achieve her blood sugar goals too. She needs to keep it under control, the books listed on the blog will tell her what to aim for, so will her diabetes nurse.

For yourself, stick with the South Beach or Atkins low carb diet and get that weight off while you can. Get tested for diabetes and rechecked every year. If you are pre-diabetic or diabetic, the links on the blog I mentioned will help you get started on educating yourself about this disease. Work with your mom to reduce carbs, and eat healthy, and be more active. Make the emphasis on good blood sugar control, and good health rather than weight and she'll be a lot more likely to listen and work with you.

As much bad as there is in this world, we need to overlook as much of it as we can to be able to have a positive outlook on life. Unless you're raping or murdering people in your spare time or watching or making child pornography, then you have a good place in this world and deserve a happy life full of joy. I hope that you will see this and that it may help you to decide not to hurt yourself or... you know.. because the right person is there for you somewhere in this world, why would you want them to be lonely for the rest of their lives because you miss out on life. be happy to have the ability to live. 40. QUESTION:
Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous.?
"By making obesity a disease, government does all Americans—large or not—a disservice."
Obesity should not be labeled a disease, Sonia Arrison contends in the following viewpoint. She asserts that while obesity is becoming more prevalent in the United States, treating it as an illness instead of the result of poor dietary choices would unfairly harm healthy Americans. By calling obesity a disease, the condition could be treated using Medicare or Medicaid funds, which come from the taxpayer dollars of all Americans, fat or thin. Arrison concludes that individuals must be aware of the consequence of their overeating and realize that society will not pay for their higher health care costs. Arrison is the director of technology studies at the Pacific Research Institute, a public policy think tank that promotes free-market solutions.
[In March 2005] California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his intentions to support a bill outlawing the sale of junk food in schools. Science shows the governor is right to worry about an obesity crisis, but banning candy in schools is like putting a Band-Aid on a third-degree burn.
According to the American Obesity Association, "approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese." That's a huge number of people, and basic medicine predicts that their weight problems will turn into more serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, a number of cancers, gall bladder-disease, osteoarthritis and obstructive sleep apnea.
    The Economics of Obesity
In short, people are eating themselves to death. While consequences are dire for each obese individual, what many don't realize is that their choices also harm the part of America that remains healthy. The most obvious impact is the economic strain. Numbers provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that obesity costs Americans a ton.
For instance, in 1998, medical expenses due to obesity accounted for 9.1 percent of total U.S. medical expenditures and may have been as high as .5 billion. That's a lot of cash, but the kicker is that approximately half of these costs were paid by Medicaid and Medicare—in other words, by taxpayers. There's something disturbing about this situation, which could be described as socialized obesity. By sharing the health care costs with obese people, health-conscious Americans lose tax dollars and see health insurance premiums shoot up.
[In 2004] Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson designated obesity as a disease. But much of obesity is caused by poor nutrition and behavioral problems. By making obesity a disease, government does all Americans—large or not—a disservice. Many diseases hit individuals through no fault of their own, but obesity is in a different category.
    Individual Responsibility
To ward off obesity, proper diet and exercise are necessary. Yet the socialization of the costs of the problem only makes it more likely that individuals will carry on with their destructive behavior. It's not rocket science: Whatever is subsidized will grow. And by incentivizing individuals to ignore the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle, we all suffer a productivity hit when otherwise smart people die early due to obesity-related diseases. Dr. Bruce Ames, the eminent biochemist and inventor of the Ames test for carcinogens, has made longevity and diet one of his key areas of study. His conclusions show that in order to live longer, individuals must maintain a good diet, including the proper amount of vitamins and antioxidants. This advice might seem a no-brainer, but it is easy to ignore in a society where junk food marketing is everywhere and the costs of individual overeating are distributed amongst everyone.
The best way to help mitigate the onslaught of obesity is to make sure that individuals are aware that the costs of their behavior will be borne by them. That is, if they choose to eat potato chips and sit in front of the television night after night, instead of eating fruits and vegetables and exercising, then they should not expect society to help them pay the higher costs of health insurance.
Perhaps this is a cultural issue as much as a political one, which brings the discussion back to Governor Schwarzenegger's quest to ban junk food in schools. The idea of educating the population about the risks associated with empty calories, such as those found in soda, is a good one. And in a publicly-run system where government is supposed to be responsible for the well being of children, perhaps it makes sense. But there is a larger issue.
While schools should educate children about nutrition and a healthy diet, ultimately, kids will have to make their own decisions. So the lesson is also one of individual responsibility. That's how a free and healthy society operates.

    • ANSWER:
Try taking out the little bits of slang, like "the kicker" and "no-brainer". They stand out too much in a piece that is so factual. Also, you seem to have two arguments here: that obesity should not be treated as a disease in order to avoid financially punishing thinner people, and that children should be taught to make better nutritional choices rather than having those choices made for them. Whatever my opinion on either of those issues, you should either make the tie between them clearer or focus on one or the other.

  42. QUESTION:
What to expect in the steps toward weight loss surgery?
My mother & I are both interested in weight loss surgery. Trying to decide if Gastric Bypass or Lap Band are best. Any opinions? We are attending a seminar on August 30th. What can we expect at the seminar & what can we expect through the whole process like what are the steps? Looking to hear from those who have had either of these done. Appreciate all responses.

I am close to 200 lbs & only 5 foot tall. There are many people in the family that have medical issues. [Sleep apnea, heart disease, stroke, obesity]. I have difficulty breathing when laying down, arthritis in both knees, depression, migraines, always tired. Not sure if any of those are due to my weight.

But I'm interested in trying to find out more about these surgeries & hopefully qualify to get one of them.

    • ANSWER:
I am getting gastric bypass Monday August 16th, 2010. It's a week from today. I am very excited. I would DEFINITELY for for the gastric BYpass instead of the lap band. You don't lose weight as fast as the gastric and there are other little things that make it slower. I want to lose weight as fast as I can before my health gets any worse. So definitely the gastric. I am 20 years old, 266 lbs, and only 5'3". So my BMI is about 47. There is a lot I had to do in order to get to this stage.
First, you ask your PCP about the surgery. If he or she recommends it and thinks its a good idea, they will give you a number for a Bariatric Surgeon.
Second, You'll call the surgeon and set up a schedule to see him. You'll fill out paperwork, show proof of insurance, etc. They will meet you with the surgeon, and then a dietitian will give you a binder of signed prescriptions for (1) Blood work (to check for thyroid levels, and etc). (2) Upper GI. (3) Psychological evaluation. You will also have to go on a 1200 calorie diet for 6-7 months.
Third, after you got all the blood work, dieting done (you'll weigh in once a month at your PCP's office), upper gi, psych evaluation, and alll the paper work complete, you will call the Bariatric hospital again, about 7 months later, telling them your diet and work is done.
Fourth, Once the gastric bypass clinic has all your information, they will send it to the insurance company. About two days later, they will tell you whether its approved or not. Then, very shortly after, they'll call you back and set up a surgery date.
Last, you'll see the surgeon one more time before the surgery for last minute blood work and paperwork. Then you'll get your time for the surgery date. They'll tell you what to do before and after the surgery and all goes well :]

Good luck! I hope you push through the process like I have and get your surgery. It'll change your life forever.

  44. QUESTION:
    Is this article True?
    1) Less may mean more. For people who sleep under seven hours a night, the fewer zzzz's they get, the more obese they tend to be, according to a 2006 Institute of Medicine report. This may relate to the discovery that insufficient sleep appears to tip hunger hormones out of whack. Leptin, which suppresses appetite, is lowered; ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, gets a boost.
    2) You're more apt to make bad food choices. A study published this week in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that people with obstructive sleep apnea or other severely disordered breathing while asleep ate a diet higher in cholesterol, protein, total fat, and total saturated fat. Women were especially affected.
    3) Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance, its precursor, may become more likely. A 2005 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that people getting five or fewer hours of sleep each night were 2.5 times more likely to be diabetic, while those with six hours or fewer were 1.7 times more likely.
    4) The ticker is put at risk. A 2003 study found that heart attacks were 45 percent more likely in women who slept for five or fewer hours per night than in those who got more.
    5) Blood pressure may increase. Obstructive sleep apnea, for example, has been associated with chronically elevated daytime blood pressure, and the more severe the disorder, the more significant the hypertension, suggests the 2006 IOM report. Obesity plays a role in both disorders, so losing weight can ease associated health risks.
    6) Auto accidents rise. As stated in a 2007 report in the New England Journal of Medicine, nearly 20 percent of serious car crash injuries involve a sleepy driver—and that's independent of alcohol use.
    7) Balance is off. Older folks who have trouble getting to sleep, who wake up at night, or are drowsy during the day could be 2 to 4.5 times more likely to sustain a fall, found a 2007 study in the Journal of Gerontology. 8) You may be more prone to depression. Adults who chronically operate on fumes report more mental distress, depression, and alcohol use. Adolescents suffer, too: One survey of high school students found similarly high rates of these issues. Middle schoolers, too, report more symptoms of depression and lower self-esteem.
    9) Kids may suffer more behavior problems. Research from an April issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine found that children who are plagued by insomnia, short duration of sleeping, or disordered breathing with obesity, for example, are more likely to have behavioral issues like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
    10) Death's doorstep may be nearer. Those who get five hours or less per night have approximately 15 percent greater risk of dying—regardless of the cause—according to three large population-based studies published in the journals Sleep and the Archives of General Psychiatry.

  45. QUESTION:
why fat women are proud to be fat?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to offend anyone.
I just have a doubt, and I'd like to know the answer.
Because as far as I know, obesity is not healthy: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, sleep apnea and so on, are not good at all. Besides it's not that hard to some physical activity at leat once a week, I'm sorry but I don't get it.
    so why?

have a nice day! I hope you don't take this question the wrong way

    • ANSWER:
As an overweight woman (who is not particularly proud of it) let me just say that it isn't all that easy to lose fat once you've got it. I regularly go to the gym 3 times a week for a least an hour each time. I'm still considered overweight and I have struggled with it for most of my life.

I think some women need to be proud of what they have to help their own self esteem. Obesity is not healthy, but neither is being too skinny.

  46. QUESTION:
Is it time to ban food?
We've seen the moronic rush to ban all sorts of potential self-abuse (helmet laws, drug laws, seat belt laws, etc); why not food?

Sleep apnea, which causes uncontrollable daytime drowsiness (motorists falling asleep at the wheel), is directly linked to obesity . . . DIRECTLY.

So, obesity, which is a precursor to sleep apnea, could kill YOU when the lard-monkey beside you on the highway, dozes off.--even if YOU are slim and trim.

    See the connection?

Fatness kills more people than drug use, helmetless motorcycle riding, and unbelted drivers.

Restrict everyone to 1500 calorie per day diets NOW.

  47. QUESTION:
Is it ever appropriate to tell a good friend that her health problems are weight related?
Now I'm not a doctor, but my best friend is always complaining about various health problems like she can't sleep, always tired, legs have swollen bumps, always catching colds, etc. She says she's "at her wits end" to why she always feels like crap. It's quite obvious to me that it's from her obesity. Doctors have told her she has sleep apnea, yet instead of telling her to lose weight they told her to buy this 0 machine to sleep with. I know it's a sensitive subject to her, but as her best friend of 10 years, can I try to get her to see that weight is the problem? Or is that something I should keep my mouth shut about?

    • ANSWER:
First off, don't ever doubt that you are not a good friend because you are.
You genuinely care about your friend.
It's wrong for "friends" to lie to their friends who are overweight, that they look good in a particular outfit when they don't or that they won't ever develop serious health risks being obese (diabetes, high cholesterol, heart attacks).
I don't know if her health problems are due to being obese because I used to be obese and didn't have the issues she has.
She could just be a sickly person.
Those doctors scammed her into buying some expensive machine to sleep with.
I'd suggest you gently tell her that she needs to loose weight and that you'll be there with her to help her lose weight by going for walks or going to the gym or even cooking dinner together.
Hopefully, she won't feel like you are attacking her.
Honestly, I wish I had a friend like you growing up that didn't want me to be obese, cared about how I looked and felt and wanted me to be happy.
It's not good to anyone to keep their mouth shut when someone they care or love, have problems especially problems they are in denial about having.
I hope that this helps and take care of yourself. I mean it. ~ Alan

  48. QUESTION:
How Do I Convinced My GYN To Put Me On Metformin For My PCOS?
I'm not on any medications, but would like very much to go on Metformin to restore my menstrual cycles since I haven't had one since November 2008.

I was just diagnosed in May 2009 and they told me to keep dieting and exercising and if nothing changed to come back in November to get on meds. Thing is I've been exercising since April and still no period.

Usually it doesn't take this long to kick it. That's why I want Metformin, but I'm not sure what I should do if they refuse to give it to me. I've never had blood work done, but my symptoms are pretty obvious (obesity, excess hair, dark patches of skin, prior sleep apnea, upper thigh acne).

    Any advice?

    • ANSWER:
First, are you sure you want to be on Metformin (glucophage)? I have PCOS and was on it for more than a year and YES, I lost weight- but I gained SEVERE diarrhea, a weird smell when urinating and other not-so-pleasant side effects of the medications. Be sure that you get an ultrasound to show your polycistic ovaries too. That should do the trick. Even with no exercise at all (i just did weight watchers) I was smaller than I have ever been on the Metformin. Good luck. For me, the benefits were NOT worth it. SEVERE diarrhea!!!! The worst!

  49. QUESTION:
Why isn't the lap-band covered by Tenncare?
obesity leads to heart problems, diabetes, knee/hip problems, fluid build up, high blood pressure, etc. It would not be a cosmetic surgery. It would be a future health problem with Tenncare paying for medication from start to death. Problem after problem. I already have sleep apnea-if I could have the ,000 surgery than my chances would go down tremendously on the other future problem. Diabetes runs in my family history and has not skipped anyone and won't but, my medical future will be so much better with the lap-band surgery. I have struggled with my weight for all my life and I think this could help alot of overweight people would benefit from the surgery. In the long run, the surgery would outway a lifetime of medicine and doctor bills. So my question is "Why doesn't Tenncare pay for the lap-band surgery?"

    • ANSWER:
First I want to say sorry I know what its like fighting with the insurance companies, Its heart breaking and stupid they would rather watch you die than see you well and happy I have done so much research on the lap band and know its the right thing, and your not having your guts torn apart like that other surgery. I am going to have the surgery on the 8th of Dec. Now you might call me crazy but as I said I have done my research but im going to Mexico to have it done its ,000.00 and that includes everything hotel fills for the rest of your life but not the air fair (thank god I live in Arizona I can drive) It is safe!!! most people that come back to the US only have a few things to say!! It was great!! and Shame on the US hospitals and the insurance companies they were treated better there than any US hospital and they never added anymore to the cost for anything. If you would like to know more I would be glad to share or help point you in some of the research I have done. Just don't let this frustrate you into not going for the goals you have...Good luck Wantabe goingtabe bandster bgaroo@yahoo.com

  50. QUESTION:
Why has my cat suddenly started snoring?
I'm sitting here at my computer, and suddenly one of the cats has just started snoring. She's almost 3 years old, not overweight so not prone to sleep apnea, if there's a correlation between snoring and obesity in cats as there is with humans, but it just kind of weirded me out because I've never heard this cat snore before. Could it be the weather giving her respiratory issues, as happens with humans? She's an indoor cat, so she stays in a fairly well-controlled environment.
This cat has only been outside twice, and she hated it. So that's not an issue as far as being out in cold weather and being around other cats. The other cat that lets us humans live in their household is this cat's mother.
For your amusement, here's a picture of the snoring cat (Phoebe) drinking from the toilet:
