Sleep apnea is a painful and arduous sleeping disorder that affects many adults. Not only does the sleeping disorder affect the amount of rejuvenating sleep a person receives, but it also affects their daytime activities and attitude. Many people who suffer from sleep apnea may not be aware of their sleeping disorder and will try to pursue medications and alternative healing to alleviate the daytime problems without realizing that they are not receiving adequate sleep. Luckily, for those who can recognize the symptoms and seek consultation from a doctor, there is a cure. These machines have been helping patients with sleep apnea for nearly three decades. With the proper maintenance and attention, a sleep apnea machine can help rid a person of sleep apnea for the rest of their lives.
Due to the lack of oxygen entering the brain during the sleep cycles, sleep apnea can cause severe headaches during the day. Additionally, many people who suffer from this sleeping disorder report irritability, persistent drowsiness, and a constant feeling of not getting a good night's sleep. While sleeping, patients and their spouses report loud snoring and obstructed breathing (which is a characteristic of sleep apnea). Sleep apnea can negatively affect a person's job performance, as well as their self esteem.
Sleep apnea can continue undiagnosed for long periods of time. In fact, it is usually the spouse of the person with sleep apnea that reports a sleeping problem with their mate. When the problem remains undiagnosed, problem sleepers pursue a variety of alternatives. Some may buy over the counter sleeping aides hoping it helps them achieve a deeper sleep, and others may seek prescription sleep medications to try and alleviate the nighttime arousal. Others may approach alternative healing by pursuing yoga or meditation classes.
Once diagnosed, a person with sleep apnea only needs a prescription for a sleep apnea machine to alleviate their problems. There are a few different types of sleep apnea machines that can help aid sleepers. Apart from the CPAP, there is an APAP. The APAP automatically tunes the pressurized air on a breath by breath basis. There is also the VPAP, which is for more extreme cases of sleep apnea. The VPAP helps with both the inhale and exhale functions during sleep. Sleep apnea machines also offer several optional pieces that can help make the process more comfortable for users. A humidifier moistens the air and can help alleviate the discomfort of dry compressed air. A ramp is another optional feature that temporarily lowers air pressure to help the sleeper fall asleep. Another option is the exhalation pressure relief, which adjusts the pressure during exhalation. Finally, flexible chin straps can be added to help keep the candidate from breathing through the mouth.
These sleep apnea machines are relatively easy to take care of, and are highly portable. The owner's manual can provide detailed information for how to properly care for the specific sleep apnea machine. In most cases, the required maintenance entails a regular cleaning of the hoses and masks, and regularly changing the filters. Additionally, the machine must be checked regularly for any worn out attachments or tears in the connections or fabrics. If the sleep apnea machine contains a humidifying devise, it is pertinent to keep the devise clean of mold and algae. Since continuous unobstructed use of the machine is imperative to successful treatment, the machine is designed to be highly portable. Newer models of machines are incredibly light and compact. The sleep apnea machines usually come with a carrying case and international power units for electric sockets.
These incredibly portable and low maintenance machines are the perfect solution for people with sleep apnea. After several nights with the sleep apnea machines' assistance, sleepers will feel rested and more energetic than they have felt in while.

QUESTION:
Can a person bring a sleep apnea machine aboard an airplane when flying internationally?
I have sleep apnea and use a sleep apnea breathing machine when sleeping (no oxygen) with a mask and distilled water. When travelling on an airplane internationally can I bring it with me so it is with me at the other country when I get there?-
ANSWER:
Hello !I know that most personnel at security checkpoints in airports are familiar with CPAP machines. t's advisable to carry along your prescription and/or statement of medical necessity from your physician so that you can demonstrate the need for your CPAP machine.
I found from different sources that many CPAP users report no problems getting through the X-ray machine and passing the subsequent explosives and chemical tests, while others are forced to check their CPAP machines because they don't pass the X-ray check.
My recommendation would therefore be to expect to be able to take your CPAP machine on an airplane with you, but don't be surprised if you end up having to check it. And don't forget your prescription from your doctor!
Good luck!

QUESTION:
How do you turn the pressure down on a Sleep Apnea Machine?
I have Sleep Apnea and need to adjust the air pressure on the machine. I have lost my insurance and can not afford to have it professionally adjusted. If you know how please answer this question. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
There are 275,000 different kinds of machines... Ok, not really. But there are so many different kinds, you should include the make of machine. However, a lot of 'home machines' are locked in to a specific setting by the company and cannot be adjusted - without knowing how to unlock it.And, why do you think the air pressure needs to be adjusted? Without a formal sleep study, it's almost impossible to know what pressure you need.

QUESTION:
What sort of soap should I use to clean a Sleep Apnea Machine (CPAP Machine)?
I looked up how to clean a sleep apnea machine for my Nana and it said to use a mild soap. But I am not sure what this means. What should I use? I assume it should have no fragrance.-
ANSWER:
Take a soft cloth and wet it with warm water. Gently wipe down the external surface of the CPAP machine. (Again, make certain it is unplugged while cleaning.)#Fill a small sink, tub, or basin with warm water. Add a small amount of **gentle dish soap.**
Dawn Complete Dish Soap
Dawn complete has all the same grease removal greatness of original Dawn, with added benefits to your hands. Dawn is so gentle, that it can be used for dishes and as a hand soap. It come in original, antibacterial, apple blossom, and floral scents.
# Submerge the mask, headgear, tubing, and connectors in the warm soapy water. Allow it to soak for a short period of time (about 30 minutes). Alternatively, wipe out the mask with a soft cloth and warm water, and swish soapy water through the tubing. Allow everything to air dry on a towel. These items should ideally be cleaned every day.
#The humidifier should be cleaned with hot water and mild soap. It should also be allowed to air dry. Remember to only put distilled water in the humidifier. If you do not, there is an increased risk of illness as well as the probability that hard minerals will build up on your equipment. The humidifier should ideally be cleaned weekly.
#Some CPAP machines have filters in place. It will be important to review your manufacturer’s instructions or ask your equipment provider about how these should be maintained. Some can be rinsed but others must be replaced, and the timing of this will vary depending on the environment you use the machine in.
#Finally, after everything has been allowed to air dry, reassemble the various parts. Apply the headgear to your mask, hook the mask back onto the tubing and any connectors, and connect the tubing back to the humidifier or directly to the CPAP machine. Turn the machine on briefly and listen for any air leaks that weren’t there previously.

QUESTION:
Does a Sleep Apnea Machine Stop Snoring?
Does sleep apnea machine usage stop/prevent snoring?
Does the machine make noise? My husband is getting a machine this week. I would like to know if he will stop snoring and I can sleep better. Or, will the machine be loud and disturb my sleep?
-
ANSWER:
My husband uses a CPAP machine, and yes, it stopped his snoring completely. The machine does make a noise, sort of a "white noise" fan sound. I got used to it - I find it covers up a lot of other noises, like traffic, and now I practically need that noise to sleep well myself.

QUESTION:
If diagnosed with SLEEP APNEA, and you don't use a machine is it bad for your heart?
If you don't use a sleep apnea machine and you have had a open heart surgery 5 yrs ago, can it put you at a huge risk of heart attack or whatever......and could die too??Can it also affect other parts of your organs in your body?
-
ANSWER:
A lot of this depends on how bad his sleep apnea is. If he is having multiple, long episodes of apnea every night then yes, this is putting a strain on his heart. If he is only having a few, short periods every night, then his risk is not as great. He needs a sleep study in order to determine how bad his sleep apnea is and then his doctor can determine his risk factors. If he wakes up tired in the morning, falls asleep easily as soon as he gets home a night, then his quality of sleep during the night is poor, leaving him fatigued daily which is also a stressor on his heart. People who nap as soon as they sit down in a recliner can improve the quality of their life by the use of a C-PAP machine - they will feel more rested every morning and have more energy. Sleep apnea stresses mostly the heart, not other organs. If the sleep apnea is severe and not treated, then yes, this could stress a weak heart to the point where a heart attack occurs and a person could die. Your doctor needs to make the determination as to whether he thinks this might be a stress on his heart.

QUESTION:
Does anyone out there have a forced air machine for sleep apnea?
My boyfriend has sleep apnea and we are looking for a sleep apnea forced air machine to buy. He does not have insurance and the doctor wants him to stay overnight at a sleep center to confirm that he actually has sleep apnea. The cost of the sleep clinic is 00.00 for (1) night!! I know he has sleep apnea and the only treatment for it is a forced air machine. In the meantime he is not getting any quality sleep and is affecting his daily life!! Please Help Us!!-
ANSWER:
You mean a CPAP - these are commonly prescribed for people with apnea. Apnea can be a serious problem, but there is some concern that sleep clinics and the CPAP machines have become big business. There is no accurate diagnosis of sleep apnea where a machine becomes essential. Most people, once they get used to the noise, do sleep well using these machines, but other remedies might also have helped.Sleeping on the back is often a problem. An old solution to that is to tape a tennis ball to the back of a T shirt and wear that in bed - it prevents the person from sleeping on their back; and that's pretty cheap!
Other options may be repair of a deviated septum, or other surgery to fix problems in the throat.
If your partner does not frequently stop breathing during the night, a CPAP may not really be necessary.

QUESTION:
Do you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea?
Do you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea? If so, how long have you used it? Did you notice an immediate improvement, or did it take a while? Was it hard to get used to using the machine?
-
ANSWER:
Although I don't use a CPAP machine, I am a respiratory therapist that works for a national company that does alot of cpap/bipap machines for apnea patients. The average time it takes a person to get used to a machine is anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. The key though is for you and your DME company to come up with a mask that works the best for you and your sleeping needs. If you are a nose breather, and sleep on your stomach please let them know this. That way they can equip you with a mask that will provide you the best mobility but also seals like it needs too. Also, if you can only wear the machine for say 4 hours the first few nights, that is ok, it does take a little bit to get used to it. Hopefully the more you wear, the longer the time you can tolerate it. Also, please remember to wear the machine when you nap.

QUESTION:
Can you improve performance of the sleep apnea CPAP machine on your own, without docs' help?
My brother has been prescribed the CPAP and can't tell much difference in his sleep. He is due to go for a checkup to the sleep clinic and doesn't want to tell them this because he's afraid they will make him go through another 00 worth of sleep tests to adjust settings or something. So if he can make the CPAP thing work better without having to tell the docs, it will help his health and checking account. Anybody know about this?
Thanks =D
-
ANSWER:
Some doctors will just up the pressure based on the symptoms. They can also use what is called an autopap. The cpap sense what the body needs and give the proper pressure. That can be his nightly machine or the DME company can loan it for a week to see what the setting should be.Also if he just started, it may take a few weeks to a month to see any results.

QUESTION:
this is for those that have sleep apnea. How do you get used to the cpap machine?
I am having a sleep apnea test done soon and may have to use the machine. I had the sleep apnea long time ago but I couldn't get used to the machine so I sent it back.-
ANSWER:
Sleep apnea machines and masks have come along way in the last 2 years. 1st make sure that the home care co. that is setting up the equipment will work with you, if they aren't willing to, go to another company! You are the customer and they CAN get you comfortable with something. There are so many different masks & nasal pillows available, not to mention what they are doing with the machines now! Puritan Bennett has a machine that is about the size of the 1st personnal CD players they came out with in the 80's, and Respironics has machines that work with your breathing pattern!(check out their web sites)
This is something you need to be pro-active about. Lack of sleep does so many bad things to your body- poor memory, weight gain, depression, etc. Not to mention what the lack of oxygen in your body when you don't breath at night does to your brain and heart.
Good Luck!

QUESTION:
If you have a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, how often should it be adjusted?
I got mine four years ago but have not had an additional night at the sleep lab since then. Is this something that needs to be periodically monitored or should I just let sleeping (snoring?) dogs lie?-
ANSWER:
I think this is one of those "no news is good news" kind of things. As a fellow sufferer, I know that the pressure setting on your CPAP was prescribed by your doctor based on the resuslts of your sleep lab experience. As long as the machine is providing the desired results (no snoring or apnea), then I'm pretty sure nothing else need be done. Obviously, you need to maintain the filters--clean or replace, as the case may be.

Are there any medical supply companies in Morocco that service sleep apnea machines?
Does anyone know of any companies in the country Morocco that service sleep apnea machines?
I have a Resmed. I also need to buy a convertor and battery for my machine.
Thanks in advance for your help
Thank you very much for the information and the help, i really appreciate it. I will check that all out.
thanks again-
ANSWER:
Are you in Morocco right now? An electrical converter (125v to 220v) should be easy to find. You will also need a plug adapter for Moroccan outlets (depending on where you're from). You might also have a family member simply ship you a battery. (Moroccan mail is unreliable so use DHL or some other private shipper)
Resmed's closest office is in Egypt. See: http://www.resmed.com/int/assets/html/contact_us/offices-africa-middle-east.html?nc=contactus
Call them and see how they can help you.Also. This is a clinic in Casablanca that treats sleep apnea. Call them and see if they can refer you somewhere within Morocco. http://www.cmr-maroc.com/

QUESTION:
Cpap machine usage can i still get sleep apnea?
I have been using a Cpap machine for Server sleep apnea, and it changed my life i didnt nap once during the day where as before i constantly napped. however i am finding my self feeling a little tired these days, why would this be?, i get a great nights sleep so i believe so it isnt making much sense.
anyone experience this at all and have any clues?-
ANSWER:
Deep deprivation affects many areas of your body and can result in fatigue, memory problems, and can lead to illnesses such as heart disease and stroke. If your sleep is interrupted by frequent periods in which you do not breathe for up to a minute at a time, you may be suffering from sleep apnea, one of the most undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders. Sleep apnea is a very treatable disorder. The treatment involves the use of CPAP machines. These machines are used in conjunction with a sleep apnea mask that allows air to be gently pushed into the airways so that a person can sleep without interruption. Since loss of sleep can affect how well the immune system fights illnesses and diseases, a full night of uninterrupted sleep is necessary to maintain good health. We have all the CPAP supplies you need to successfully treat sleep apnea and feel better.

QUESTION:
How do you turn the volume down on a sleep apnea machine? aprea?-
ANSWER:
Are you refering to noise? or are you refering to volume as in volume of air? That has to be set in inches of water by a technician, based on the prescription from your doctor. Every machine is adjusted differently some can be set manually programed using the LCD indicator on the machine. The directions come with the machine when it is delivered from the manufacturer. They are removed just before they are delivered to the patient. Basically it is a combination of the controls being pushed down at the same time and being held until the LCD changes based on the brand. You can set the ramp up time the delay to get to the pressure as well as the pressure like mine is 10 inches of water! It should REALLY BE SET BY THE HEALTH SERVICE PERSONNEL!
There is no way to adjust the sound!

QUESTION:
What would be the best way to take my CPAP (machine used for sleep apnea) machine when I fly?
I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have the cpap machine and of course of a carrying case. I have a flight in a month. Ideally I would use that as my "personal" carry on item. Problem is, that spot is already "filled" (so to speak) by my laptop bag. I do have a rather large (but still in regulation size) nike bag that I think I could fit it into. Does anyone know if that would be allowed. Or does anyone have any other suggestions?-
ANSWER:
Yes, that would be fine. CPAPs are specifically allowed as carry-on.

QUESTION:
What do you do when your husband has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and won't use the machine?
My husband has sleep apnea and will not use the machine. He also has diabetes. He goes to work, comes home sleeps for about two hours, goes to bed at 12:00 AM and gets up about 4:30 for work. On the weekends he will sleep if you let him about 14 hours a day. He would do this during the week but he has to go to work. I just don't know what to do. I'm very concerned.-
ANSWER:
Unfortunately, there's not much you can do... You can show him all the information about sleep apnea and its deleterious effects on health, how improved sleep can actually improve diabetes, etc etc, but until he decides to do what he needs to do, he'll probably just hear it as "nagging" and ignore you even more industriously. If it gets to be that bad, you could lay down an ultimatum: That if he doesn't start taking better care of himself, you'll leave because you can't stand to watch him take such risks with his health. I would certainly not recommend that, unless the marriage is already irretrievably broken and you would actually be okay with it if he said, "All right, bye then."
My sympathies are with you; it's very frustrating to watch someone you care about neglect themselves. Unfortunately, your options are rather limited. I hope someone else has a more productive answer for you. Good luck.

QUESTION:
How can I learn to accept wearing a CPAP machine for sleep apnea at night?-
ANSWER:
I have got CPAP also. I've gotten to like it when I'm going to sleep. It gives me a sense of security I didn't have before. I know I won't stop breathing during the night And that let's me relax and enjoy the sleep. I haven't actually noticed a major difference in the daytime, like be more rested or awake without yawning constantly but it is improving.
Give it a chance. Make sure it fits you comfortably. Ask the company to send over a tech to adjust it or do whatever it takes to make you more comfortable with it. It's been a Godsend for me. BTW I use the full face mask not just the nose piece which would drive me up a wall.
God bless.

QUESTION:
if you have sleep apnea, how long do you sleep each day without a CPAP machine?

ANSWER:
My uncle had sleep apnea and slept an average of 6-7 hours, however he woke frequently. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a symptom of sleep apnea. Other associated symptoms may include:
- loud snoring
- morning headaches
- unrefreshing sleep
- a dry mouth upon awakening
- chest retraction during sleep in young children (chest pulls in)
- high blood pressure
- overweight
- irritability
- change in personality
- depression
- difficulty concentrating
- excessive perspiring during sleep
- heartburn
- reduced libido
- insomnia
- frequent nocturnal urination (nocturia)
- restless sleep
- nocturnal snorting, gasping, choking (may wake self up)
- rapid weight gain
- confusion upon awakening
I would gather more info on apnea and let your husband read up on this and understand exactly what it is as this is a real sleeping disorder. I do know that the CPAP machine has helped my uncle immensly. I do hope that the machine will help you as well.

QUESTION:
Any suggestion on getting used to a CPAP (sleep apnea) machine???Help?
I recently had to start using the nostril type mask and I'm having a terrible time. Any ideas will help. HELP !!-
ANSWER:
I feel your pain. They put me in a full face mask (Moouth and nose) and I suffered through trying to use it for 4-6 weeks. Worst experience in my life.It is possible that a better mask would help- unfortunately your supplier might charge extra, with no real guarantees that you will be help. If you feel your problems sleeping are severe enough, that's the only chance you have.
What I did was I went back to the doctor and told him I was not using the machine any longer, and demanded another treatment. If you can't use the machine, you need to let the doctor know.

QUESTION:
can I take my sleep apnea machine & a backpack on board a plane?-
ANSWER:
Yes, absolutely. I am having my CPAP since 2006, flying frequently and always taking it with me. And I always take with me small carry on luggage. I never had a single issue with it. And I would even suggest not checking your CPAP in, they could easily damage it.

QUESTION:
If someone has sleep apnea are there any natural remedies besides a CPAP machine?
I have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. I have tried using a CPAP machine and I found out I was allergic to the material in the mask and also the nose tubes. So I had to give up using the machine. Are there any other remedies such as like using a cool mist humidifier to help resolve the blockage in the air way.-
ANSWER:
I wouldn't advise this, but I have heard people putting a small strip of tap over part of their mouth. Seems to work for some people.

QUESTION:
How do you cure sleep apnea without a breathing machine?
My boyfriend has no insurance. He cannot afford a machine. He wakes tired from this condition and he is a carpenter. Hard work with power tools. I worry about him.-
ANSWER:
you can't cure sleep apnea even with a cpap machine. what you can do is get a uppp operation by a ent specialist or lose weight and do not drink alcohol before sleep. do not sleep flat on your back either. those things will help but you are right to be concerned.

QUESTION:
Can I use my father's old cpap breathing machine for sleep apnea? How can i find pressure setting to use?-
ANSWER:
No you cannot. Sleep studies are required to determine settings. Playing around with an old machine can lead to more harm than good - especially if your presumed apneac events have a cause that should not be treated with CPAP. See a doctor, get a plan that is specific to your situation.

QUESTION:
Will a cpap machine improve the health of someone with sleep apnea?
I have sleep apnea and am scheduled to pick up a cpap machine this week. I found them to be uncomfortable when I spent the night at the sleep clinic but I'm going to give it a try. My sleep apnea is moderate to severe so I've got to try something to improve my condition. I've heard several people say they hadn't slept so well in years after going on the cpap. Can anyone out there give me a review? If they are bothersome at first can you eventually get used to them?-
ANSWER:
It takes about 2 weeks to get use to the machine. They are wonderful once you get use to them, I promise you! I hated mine at first! But my wife wanted me to live! I swear that it made me feel 20 years younger ( i am 61). I fought against it at first! But it is the best thing that has ever happened to me, I only wish I hadden't been such a hard headed sonofwhaterver in resisting to go to the sleep lab in the first place!Give it time you will really feel better! Try different face pieces including the type that just fit in your nose only ... try it out and use a chin strap to keep your mouth closed. It keeps your face free!
Good luck stay with it!

QUESTION:
i have a sleep apnea machine that drips water from the mask into my nose/face at night?
i've had the machine for 3 to 4 months and at first it was fine. now at night water builds up or gets into the mask an drips into my nose when i roll over or runs across the top of my lip. it's very disgusting and when it happens i rip the thing off in a half sleeping panic and it totally disturbs my sleep.the machine is the kind that heats the hose with a copper wire and as usual, i put distilled water in the tank.
is it possible it's just too dry in my house now that it's winter (i'm in ontario, canada so it's pretty darn cold out) and water is condensing inside the mask from my breathing? would putting a humidifier in the room help if that is the case?
has anyone had this happen? i need to make this stop since i'm not wearing the mask now most nights and i really need to (husband can't sleep and i sleep 10 to 12 hours when i don't use it).
thanks for any suggestions.
i have tried it with no water in it at all and that makes no difference.
i have also tried it with the moisture set to 0 (tank has been empty anyway) and the machine is at least 1 foot lower than the bed. probably a bit more.-
ANSWER:
There should be a humidfier setting on the machine going from 1-5 and it is probably set too high so lower the setting to 1,2, or 3. Also the machine needs to be lower than the bed. Set it on a step stool about 1 foot off the floor so any moisture in hose drains back to the machine. Also go to http://www.cpaptalk.com and you will learn anything and everything you ever need to know about cpap machines. The moisture issue you have going on is called "rainout". It is very important to have the machine lower than the bed so the moisture can drain back into the
machine instead of your mouth. My husband has sleep apnea and know just about all there is about it. He is always on this site.

QUESTION:
Has anyone used a C-Pap machine for sleep apnea?
How uncomfortable is it to wear? Can you sleep better with it? Does it make a noise?-
ANSWER:
I used a Bi-pap. I had to have a full face mask because it seems I couldn't keep my mouth closed during sleep and the air simply escaped out that path rather than developing the pressure required. Id say that's the biggest issue... the integrity of the face mask. As to comfort... it took me a month or better to adjust to wearing it but ultimately you will. You will find that your mouth will become overly dry with its use however. As to noise there is a fan in the one I used to create the air pressure/flow but because its constant it is something you learn to "tune" out.
As to results, you will definitely feel more rested.. noticeably so.

QUESTION:
Are Dr.'s over diagnosing sleep apnea to increase the profits of CPAP machine manufacturers?
I am suspect of sleep neurologists who keep pushing an apnea diagnosis as the problem (vs. narcolepsy, for example) even if a sleep study shows differently. It seems each dr. is located next door to CPAP machine rentals. I'm wondering if they are part owners or stock holders drumming up business. Just asking...
I've been to 3 drs. All said the same thing after stating the sleep tests only showed mild apnea. Sleep apnea is considered a sleep disorder and neurologists are usually the treating physician.-
ANSWER:
Well, without being too specific, I have a relative who worked his entire life for a pharmaceutical manufacturer. The funding for research he was doing in the early eighties was mysteriously pulled when they were very close to finding a cure for asthma. Naturally the company was a major manufacturer of asthma medications. Hmmm.....cure = no more profit.I think there are many companies/people in healthcare that are very suspect. ALWAYS get a second opinion, or maybe ask a holistic professional just to get another viewpoint.
****************************
Edit: In view of your additional comments, it seems three opinions would warrant biting the bullet and trying the CPAP. My ex-husband (snoring was a contributing factor in our divorce) was diagosed after he remarried and loves his CPAP, if that helps.
