Learn How To Cure Sleep Apnea

Resmed Cpap

A person diagnosed with sleep apnea has to sleep every night with CPAP machine model like a ResMed. Their life and safety may depend on this. Sleep apnea is a condition in which people stop breathing in the middle of the night. It is a serious and delicate condition.

In cases which apply to an overweight person, when he or she is lying down the weight from the abdomen compresses the lungs upward making it difficult for them to expand and contract normally. In severe cases the person will stop breathing completely for a few seconds and then they will start taking air again.

CPAPs have different functions and accessories. You can buy one that keeps a record of the breathing pattern the patient has every night. This pattern is stored in a computer chip which the patient sends to the doctor so he can download the information into his file. That way he knows exactly how his patient is sleeping and can make any adjustments to the machine or medication.

Hoses must also be inspected for leaks or tears at least once per month because the leaking air may produce changes in pressure in the machine. Your machine operates under a sealed closed pressure system to be able to monitor the inhaling and exhaling of air. This is why hoses and any accessories must be closely inspected to make sure they are in excellent condition.

If the unit has a humidifier attached to it, it is necessary to take it off and clean the inside with a mild gentle soap and sponge. Wipe it clean before returning it to its place. Again make sure that there are no leaks left between the humidifier and the air producing unit. Do not forget to check the water reservoir every night before starting the machine, operation without water may damage the humidifier.

The hoses leading from the machine to the mask can also be bought in different lengths to make sleeping comfortable. Many people turn and toss around at night and a long hose is necessary so he or she will not tear the mask of their face or pull the machine to the floor. They are not designed for the person to roll them around his or her head but they will give him or her some room to move around the bed.

Many different models and sizes are available . Some have computer programs in them and are able to send to the doctor live information on the patients breathing, others have chips which you must remove and take to the doctor for analysis. The latest equipment allows the information to be transferred by phone to any location in the world too.

When a person suffers from asthma or sleep apnea it is not a comfort to sleep with one of these machines, it is a need. It takes a little getting used to the mask but once in place and properly strapped it is comfortable and does not get in the way of sleep. Care must always be taken to change the filter in the intake. Even though the machine will sound and alarm if the air is escaping, it is always good to check it manually for any wear and tear.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How do you set the nasal pressure on a ResMed CPAP?
    Its a ResMed S7.

    • ANSWER:
Not sure but if you have lost the mannual look on the machine there should be a 1-800 number or you can call. Or try your local friendly medical equipment supply (preferrably where ever the unit came from) as they typically have the mannuals.

  2. QUESTION:
How do l adjust the air flow of my ResMed S8 CPAP Machine?
The airflow of my cpap requires adjustment (reduce air flow) and l need the sequence to make the adjustment.

    • ANSWER:
      lol i dunno

  3. QUESTION:
Two weeks after using CPAP Resmed, why do I feel the same?
I've been using CPAP Resmed S8 for two weeks (first time) and I've adapted to it already, but now I feel the same and I'm starting to develop eye bags which I've never had before. Do I need to increase the pressure already? mine is at 9.0

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like you need another sleep study done to determine if you are on the right settings. I would try turning it up to see if that's makes a difference. For the bags under your eye, you mask may not be fitting right and it could be bruising you under eyelids. Maybe get a bigger/smaller mask.

  4. QUESTION:
Does anyone know how to VIEW the pressure levels of a RESMED s6 lightweight CPAP machine?
I know how to change the pressure, but I can't find where to see the level. There are three screws in the back.........

    • ANSWER:
The hour meter readout on the bottom changes to show the pressure level.

  5. QUESTION:
    resmed cpap adjust pressure?
How to adjust ResMed s8 CPAP machine pressure? Doctor prescribed but can't wait for home health people to come in 5 to 7 days!

    • ANSWER:
I hope you have not been waiting for this long. Don't adjust the pressure yourself- do you use for sleep apnea..?
Call the home health people and tell them to come and sort it out right now.

  6. QUESTION:
How long does it take a cpap machine to work?
I just got my resmed cpap machine yesterday and last night tried it for the first time. Today i feel very tired and with barely any energy and sleepy. I think im doing everything i supposed to do as far as following all the directions. how long does it take to deliver all the benefits of this treatment. My cpap experience was better at the sleep lab than at home. Help

    • ANSWER:
Give it a week or two. You've been suffering from chronic sleep deprivation for a long time due to sleep apnea. Instead of waking up several times a night to breathe, you allow your body to enter the deeper, restorative phases of sleep. With time, the symptoms should begin to improve. If not, your machine or mask may have to be re-adjusted. If you still have trouble after a few weeks, your should discuss your concerns with your doctor or sleep specialist.

  7. QUESTION:
How to clean a CPAP Machine?
I have a ResMed CPAP machine for sleep apnea...I haven't used it in a while and I need to start using it again...I need to clean the tubing and the masks what do i use to clean it? I don't want to use anything harmful...

    • ANSWER:
they have respiclean and a tube cleaning brush. you should actually call the supplier and get new tubing, filter, and maybe a new mask. goodluck.

  8. QUESTION:
how do you set the pressure on a resmed s8 cpap?

    • ANSWER:
The best advice is to take it into an oxygen supply company (if you are in the United States) like Apria, Lincare, or any durable medical equipment provider and have them do the adjustment. You could put too much pressure (or too little) and that could have devastating effects on your health. You should also make the adjustment based on your doctor's advice. Pressures are normally determined by a sleep study and by the severity of your sleep apnea. Don't monkey with this device unless you know what you are doing. A bad move on your part could kill you.

  9. QUESTION:
Does RESMED make a "pillow" CPAP MASK with a chin strap?
The pillow version works good for me but I have to use a chin strap,,which SLIPS OFF during the night,,as the chin strap is seperate. If it had a built in chin strap it would be fine. The full face mask is a NIGHTMARE for me.

    • ANSWER:
I have never seen a built on chin strap. Call the home care company that provides your supplies. They will be thrilled to serve you. If not call another one. CPap supplies can be changed out every three months and insurance will pay for it. Masks every 6 months.

  10. QUESTION:
Is there a way to change the settings (on sd card??) on a ResMed S9 cpap machine so I don't have to wear it?
I sleep worse with this stupid machine that I ever have in my life. (It's mandatory for me to use it for 21 days for insurance purposes, and perhaps longer if they decide I need it). I have changed masks twice. My neck is in pain with the nose and mouth mask. I can't lay on my stomach because the mask is too big (and sleeping on my back or side is out of the question). The other one is a nasal mask. It's worse than the nose and mouth mask because I have sinus problems. I can't breathe well through my nose to begin with, and this mask is complete torture. It literally makes me sick. I don't know what to do because they are forcing me to wear it. I was wondering if there was a way where I can change the settings on the ResMed SD Card to make it seem like I was using the machine continuously, every night, for 21 days? Please help.

  12. QUESTION:
Do i need a prescription from my doctor for clearence of the CPAP machine at the airport?
i recently brought a CPAP machine. my CPAP machine is RESMED. as I'm a frequent traveller India & UAE to and fro, will i need a prescription from my doctor for clearence of the device at the airport?

    • ANSWER:
I've traveled from the US to Europe twice with my CPAP as carry-on and I've never been asked to see my doctor's prescription.

The security people will just ask you to remove the device from the bag, then they'll inspect it carefully. Should take about 2 minutes.
Another thing, at least in the United States, you're CPAP machine is considered essential medical equipment and it does not actually count as a carry-on, so you can still bring another carry-on if you wish.
      Hope this helps :-)

  13. QUESTION:
do i need a prescription from my doctor for clearence of the CPAP machine at the airport?
i recently brought a CPAP machine. my CPAP machine is RESMED. as I'm a frequent traveller India & UAE to and fro, will i need a prescription from my doctor for clearence of the device at the airport?

    • ANSWER:
For departures from the U.S., you do not need a letter or a note from your doctor. I do not know the rules for departures from other countries. If you can get such a letter, it might be helpful to have it with you.

The only rule I am aware of with CPAP machines in the U.S. is that you have to take them out of your carry-on bag and put them into a bin by themselves before they go through the x-ray unit.

Have a good flight, and a good sleep!

  14. QUESTION:
Could it be dangerous to use broken CPAP mask?
I use a CPAP machine to sleep; it's a resmed device and the mask is a full face mask. It has an "anti-asphyxia valve" (the elbow assembly) that has broken. I have used pvc tape to hold it together, but it's covering the vents. I'm wondering if I am risking asphyxiating myself? I have a new valve on order, but in the meantime, I'm not sure if it's better to stop using the machine or use it patched up as it is. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
is it the small clip on the side of the rotating collar? if so take the tape off and lodge a toothpick into the side of the collar to hold the clip, it will still leak some air but better than sleeping without the air flow. good luck

  15. QUESTION:
What is the best cpap machine on the market?
I think it comes down to the Respironics System One REMstar auto and the REsMed S9 elite.

Cost is not an issue here. Any input will be greatly appreciated, I'm new to all this and feel overwhelmed. Yet sleep apnea is creating a huge burden on my life.

Again, thanks to anyone that can lead me in the right direction.
I meant to write the S9 autoset, not elite.

    • ANSWER:
I think the Respironics machine probably has the edge. It is an autotitrating machine which gives a gentle lead in at the beginning and ramps up the pressure to meet your need during the night. Respironics also has a great reputation and great customer service. Good luck!

  16. QUESTION:
How do I increase the pressure on a RedMed Elite S7 cpap machine? I need help with my sleep apnea!?
I have a ResMed Elite S7 and my doc told me to turn the pressure up. Only problem is I can't find the manual and the online version didn't tell me how to do it.

    • ANSWER:
You aren't suppose to change the pressure yourself so they try to prevent you from finding out how.

I played around with my S6 and figured it out. Unplug, hold down "on" and "20 min" buttons while you plug it back in and it should go through different startup that shows on the bottom display what it is set at and lets you use ramp time buttons to change different settings.

  17. QUESTION:
Which is better Respironics REMstar Auto or ResMed S9 Autoset or ResMed S9 Elite?
Hi, My doctor has recommended me to use a CPAP machine.

My insurance company will cover 50% of the cost if I purchase from the local DME who price all the above machines the same. Can you please suggest which one of these is the best machine, less noisy and more comfortable.

    Thanks for your help.

what kinda of CPAP mask is the most comfortable ?
My husband right now used the ResMed nasal Pillows but the pillows have to enter his nostrils and make it uncomfy and sore.
Which mask is the most comfortable and not claustrophobic???

    • ANSWER:
Everyone is different. For example, I use the nasal pillows and love them but thats not to say they are for everybody. Has he tried different types of pillows? Otherwise he could try a nasal or full face mask. ResMed makes a nasal mask called the Activa or a full face mask called the Quattro that most people find comfortable.

  19. QUESTION:

  21. QUESTION:
CPAP price and where i can buy it from the real store (not on-line shop)?
    Sir...
My husband is a chinese, and started to work here from this month. But his CPAP is broken. He wants to buy a new one.
does any one know the price of below machine and mask?
    ResMed-S8 Elite II CPAP Machine
Philips Respironics-PR System One REMstar DS150 CPAP Machine
ResMed-Ultra Mirage™ II Nasal CPAP Mask with Headgear
ResMed-Swift™ FX Nasal Pillow CPAP Mask with Headgear

and please let me know where i can buy it. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Sorry-the price isn't going to be exactly the same depending on the area you live in and which DME you choose. I would shop around at local DMEs to find the best price.
I was curious why you require pricing on 2 devices as well as 2 interfaces? Surely he can only use one at a time?

  22. QUESTION:
Hi, sleep apnea. cpap machines. Has anyone experienced fluid build up in lungs using humidifier??
Using a full face mask with a resmed "spirit" auto cpap with humidifier (built-in). I find that I am sleeping on my left side. I stopped using the machine about 12 months ago. I have very recently became extremely short of breath. X-ray has shown that I have a build-up of fluid, with partial lung collapse and consolidation. Fluid was extimated at approx 2 litres (2/3 of lung capacity.) two attempts to drain the lung via needle in my back resulted in 800ml. then 170ml. I was then referred to a specialist who will use an exploratory instrument to look into my lungs then attempt to drain the remaining liquid. This is to happen next thursday, 4thy October, 07. The first attempts were done "blind" The next will be done with ultrasound assistance. Done one day stay overnight for observation. Has anyone had or heard of the build up of fluid, possible from the humidifier, in conjunction with cpap machines. Doctors are totally non committal at this point.Iam a fairly big fellow, 106Kg. 70 year

    • ANSWER:
Ok, you stopped using your home CPAP unit 12 month ago, and yet, you think that the humidifer somehow caused your fluid build up??????

      NO WAY!

What you are discribing is fluid between the lung and the thorasic cavity. There are some very serious causes that create this fluid buildup...and I am gonna let the Doctor be the bearer of that news, once he knows...He will find out cause they are gonna take samples of that fluid to the lab and look it over.

      Now, about your CPAP...USE IT!

It has a tendancy to reduce work of breathing, especially in situations like the one you discribed. And you will sleep better, feel more rested, and wont have that sleepy state come over you during the middle of the day....

And as for "fluid build up using the humidifer", I suspect what you are worried about is "rain out"...that is, where the air coming into the machine is warmed and humidifed at a temperature slightly warmer than body temperature, and it comes out to a COLD hose, and the air cools, loosing some moisture...A good example is dew on the grass in the morning...

Don't worry...all the humidity does is sooth a dry throat, caused by the volume of air and pressure to the lungs....So relax...use the CPAP...get better rest....feel better...

  23. QUESTION:
ResMed S9 AutoSet vs. Respironics REMstar Auto (PLEASE help)?
I have moderate obstructive sleep disordered breathing with UARS and don't know which machine would be better for me: the ResMed S9 AutoSet or the Respironics REMstar Auto.

Here is the data from my polysomnography:

    - AHI = 4 events per hour
    - Supine AHI = 3
    - REM AHI = 6.6
    - Obstructive apneas = 0
    - Central apneas = 0
    - Mixed apneas = 0
    - Apnea Index = 0
    - Central apnea index = 0
    - Mixed apnea index = 0
    - RDI = 26.5 events per hour
    - Total respiratory arousals = 165
    - Respiratory arousal index = 28.4
    - Total RERAs = 131
    - Rera = 22.6 per hour
    - Arousal index = 49.9
    - Arousals = 290
    - Average duration of apnea/hypopnea events = 33.8 seconds
    - Longest hypopnea = 54.9 seconds
    - Less than 1% of sleep was spent in oxygen saturations less than 90%

Diagnosis: "Moderately severe obstructive sleep disordered breathing with evidence of upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) in a patient with snoring. There was exacerbation noted during REM stage sleep."

I just did my CPAP titration study and don't have the results yet. But the technician told me that the highest pressure used was 10.

Here is the issue: I was set on getting the ResMed S9 AutoSet because it seems to be in a league of its own with all the different features and the design. Unfortunately, it doesn't detect RERA's, and the Respironics REMstar Auto does.

Given my profile, which would be more important, the design and features of the ResMed S9 AutoSet or the ability to detect RERA's with the Respironics REMstar Auto?

I'm concerned that since I have UARs with RERAs, if I get the S9 AutoSet and start having events, it wont be able to detect them and I will have no idea what's going on in terms of duration and frequency when I look at the data reports.

Here is what the ResMed S9 AutoSet detects and reports:

    - AHI
    - Pressure
    - Leak
    - Central Apnea Index (CAI)

Here is what the Respironics REMstar Auto detects and reports:

    - AHI
    - FL (flow limitation)
    - RERA
    - snore
    - leak
    - CA (clear airway apnea)
    - OA (obstructed airway apnea)
    - HY (hypopnea)
    - PB (periodic breathing)

I am totally new to all of this and have no idea if I'm over thinking this issue. However, if anybody can provide some insight as to which machine would be best for me I would greatly appreciate it. UARS has destroyed my life and I would really like to get it under control.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    • ANSWER:
My honest opinions coming from someone who's been in the clinical department of a DME company for years...

Why get an auto!? You just did a titration study which detects what your optimal pressure setting is. The doctor is not going to now order an auto adjusting machine.

The UARS that you refer to are also hypopneas and MILLIONS of people have them, including my husband, and a standard CPAP treats them well. A hypopnea is a 50% or greater reduction in flow with vary amounts of oxygen desaturations. If the tech from the titration study feels 10cm is effective, it will treat your apnea.

Based on the data you gave, your AHI is 0. That means that you had NO obstructive or central apneas or hypopneas is more than 4% drop in oxygen. Because your RDI (respiratory disturbance index) is elevated, that tells me that you have hypopneas with less than 4% drop in oxygen. You also indicated that you spend a minute amount of time below an acceptable oxygen level, if at all.

If your insurance covers CPAP (as it might not because your AHI is 0 and some insurances don't recognize RDI), a standard CPAP is what you'll get from any DME company. My favorite (as well as the other clinicians in my entire company) are the ResMed machines. The Elite II is a great machine as well as the new S9. They will record compliance, leak, AHI... You honestly wont need all that other junk. The ResMed machines are user friendly and great for travel.

An AHI of 4 indicates that you technically wouldn't have sleep apnea if the hypopneas with less than 3% desats weren't counted. So if you don't want to do CPAP, don't stress about it. Have another sleep study in 5-6 years or with weight gain...

As for the simple answer... Res Med Elite II... If you are private paying for a machine, don't waste your money buying a machine with features you don't need (the auto adjusting mode) because you already paid someone to watch you and determine that stuff...

Does that help? Make sense??? Contact me if it doesn't.

    SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT?
PILLAR PROCEDURE. MAY I HAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON YOUR EXPERIENCE? I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AND I'M NOW ON THE CPAP TREATMENT WITH THE AUTOSET BY RESMED. A LIVE IN MEXICO CITY AND I AM PLANNING TO HAVE A CONSULTATION IN DALLAS. THANKS

    • ANSWER:
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most common treatment for sleep apnea which may help to stop snoring. But one need to use it properly, also till it is recommended. CPAP may eliminate snoring and prevent sleep apnea. It has some side effects like dry or stuffy nose, sore eyes, bloating of stomach, skin irritation etc.
Some treatment includes- surgery, dental appliances, Tracheostomy, Maxillomandibular advancement, etc. All these are possible treatments which may be used according to the severity of the disorder.

  26. QUESTION:
Sleep Apnea - Lack of energy and appetite?
I am 34, 145-150 lbs. 5'6" and diagnosed with a light case of Sleep Apnea in 2003. I've been on a CPAP machine now for about 9 mos. I am currently using the ResMed S8 Series C-PAP (pressure: 10) with a nasal pillow mask which seems to be working for me. I average 7-8 hours of sleep per night, but even after sleeping all night I still feel tired all day and find it hard to concentrate and listen. Almost daily, my appetite seems to lessen by dinner and I feel really drained. Sometimes It's like feeling hungry and nausea at the same time (really weird). I've had tests done for thyroid, blood count, etc. which all came back normal. I can't stay up late like I used to and I'm just really trying to get back my energy. I can't remember the last time I actually woke up so refreshed that I was ready to go. I was just wondering if anyone else with apnea is experiencing these symptoms? If so, were you able to correct it? If not, perhaps this is some other problem yet to be diagnosed...?

    • ANSWER:
My husband uses a CPAP machine at night, has for the past 2 years. We are both nurses. I asked him his thoughts and he stated that he feels much more rested than he did before starting CPAP, but can't say he feels totally refreshed and energetic all day. He does take naps after work, and tries to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

I'm going to assume you're not a smoker. The hungry/nauseated feeling usually indicates hunger, so even if your appetite doesn't seem great, you should be sure and eat 3 moderate meals a day and two substantial snacks containing protein and a bit of fat and/or complex carbohydrate. Are you exercising? He goes to the Y every other day, and we walk in the evening either on the treadmill or outside. Sometimes exhaustion is self-perpetuating; people feel they're too tired to exercise, and lack of exercise makes one feel tired.

It sounds as though you need to tell your doctor that you're still feeling more tired than you think you should. Have you had an EKG or echocardiogram or any heart studies? Sleep apnea can cause heart problems, although yours was mild and you are correcting the sleep problem. I'm sorry we don't have anything more to offer. Your doctor may be able to dig further into your concerns.
