  9. QUESTION:
Anyone have any remedies for snoring?
My husband has a major problem with snoring. It never used to bother me before, but our daughter sleeps in the same room as we do. It's not his snoring that wakes her, it's when he stops. I don't understand it. He'll stop, then start again, and she'll wake up a lil, wanting her bottle. Any suggestions? Btw, I don't and will not consider putting her in another room. I'm hoping we'll find something to help his snoring.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the cause of his snoring i guess.. If it's just the angle he tilted his while sleeping or its because he sleeps with his mouth opened, which signifies breathing difficulties, try the "breatheright" sticker available in pharmacies.. Its like a very firm band-aid sticked on the nose which kinda stretches the nostrils to ease breathing. In my case, i have sinus so breatheright wont work. i fix it with a nasal spray before i go to bed given to me by the doctor.

I have tried to the nose strips, the throat sprays, sleeping on my side, and anything thing else I can think of....my boyfriend HATES it and we think I might have real medical issue, but I would like to try herbs before going to an ENT doctor.

    • ANSWER:
Chronic Sleep Apnea. Or whatever the right term is will not be solved by any medicine, natural or synthetic. Your solution consists of:

      1. Wear a head brace. It straps your jaw shut which relieves your air passage.

      2. Sleep on your side. It again relieves the passage.

      3. Surgery.

      4. Use a breathing machine. It basically rams air down your throat for you so you don't have to struggle to suck it in.

Basically, besides keeping others awake, your being sleep deprived. It makes you die younger, among other things.

      5. On last method is that like plastic u-shaped clamp that goes in your nostrils. It works for some people who's problem is not too severe.

When you go to sleep, relax ALL of your muscles, especially in your neck. If you then snore in order to inhale, then change positions. Keep experimenting until you've found a position that does not force you to snore. Usually you'll have to sleep on your side.

If you doctor perscribes clinical observation, your HMO should pay for it.

But sorry, it's not something that can be dealt with with medicine.

  13. QUESTION:
    Snoring remedies for men?
My wretched boyfriend keeps me awake at night with his snoring. It sounds like he is trying to suck the light fittings off the wall. I know very well that if he didn't drink in the evenings it wouldn't be as bad but he won't listen. Has anyone used anti-snore aids successfully? I was going to buy him some of those snore-strip things that stick onto your nose. Do they work? (Remedies have to be available in the UK)

As you can tell, I'm quite fed-up - so no sillyness please!

    Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
Snoring can be caused by sinus or by soft tissues in the back of the throat.

Since he drinks that soft tissue relaxes more and he snores more loudly. He's a future candidate for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Nothing will help this but medical treatment. Strips won't make a difference since they work to open the sinus passages.

plz. suggest some easy home remedies for snoring. Does homeopathy medicine help?

    • ANSWER:
Severe snoring is often related to a condition called sleep apnea. Homeopathy is an excellent resource. Sleep apnea is not considered a self-help first-aid and acute care problem, though, so you'd have to consult with a certified homeopath for constitutional strengthening.

Everyone's answers together are true, so maybe one will help you. Based on what I've seen people try, I'd vote for what helped Magdalena's husband. Or, sleep in another room.

Anyone know of any remedies for drooling and/or snoring?
Home remedies would obviously be the preference rather than a doctor making you pay so much for prescriptions. Just curious to know if anyone has stopped thier drooling while sleeping and possibly their snoring,... if at the least reduced it.
    Anyone?

    • ANSWER:
Breathe Right Nasal Strips work great for snoring, but below is some more information I found at http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/Snoring-Home-Treatment

Losing weight. Many people who snore are overweight. Weight loss can help reduce the narrowing of the airway and possibly reduce or eliminate snoring.

Limiting the use of alcohol and medications. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or taking certain medications, especially sleeping pills or tranquilizers, before sleep may worsen snoring.

Going to bed at the same time each night and getting plenty of sleep. Snoring may be more frequent when you have not had enough sleep.

Sleeping on your side. Sleeping on your side may eliminate snoring. Try sewing a pocket in the middle of the back of your pajama top, putting a tennis ball into the pocket, and stitching it closed. This will help keep you from sleeping on your back.

Promptly treating breathing problems. Breathing problems caused by colds or allergies can disturb airflow, leading to snoring.

Using nasal strips. Nasal strips, such as Breathe Right, widen the nostrils and improve airflow.

I could not find any information on drooling while sleeping.

      Hope this helps.

  31. QUESTION:
What is the best stop snoring home remedy?
I have had problems my whole life with snoring, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for the best stop snoring home remedy. It's really been bothering me recently, and I want it to stop already! Any help would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
You really should see your doctor and be tested for sleep apnea or nasal or throat polyps, or sinus troubles.

Some things to try at home:
      1. the nasal strips (Breathe Right is a brand name). Those can help with snoring and for nasal congestion.
      2. Don't sleep on your back. My husband snores, but i've noticed it doesn't happen if he is sleeping on his side. Prop with pillows to keep yourself from rolling onto your back.
      3. Raise the head of your bed up on blocks.
      4. Lose weight. If you have a thick neck, that will partially block your airway and cause snoring.
      5. Get more rest. My hubby tends to snore when he is more tired than usual.
      6. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. At night mucous membranes dry out and could lead to snoring.

And again, see your doctor to be checked.

  32. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any remedies to stop snoring??
My husband snores loudly every night which makes it difficult for me to try to get some sleep. He has tried the nose strips and they didn't work for him at all. Any other suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Something that has worked for me in the past is simply waking her up a few times and telling her to stop snoring. I learned this from her cause when I snored she would hit me, and after that I would go back to sleep and not snore anymore, maybe sub-consciously I knew but something wouldnt let me snore in my sleep. No I wasnt scared in my sleep to snore but after being hit (small little slaps on the arm) then I knew I was annoying her and somehow I just would stop, try it. Just wake him and tell him to stop in a monotone voice.

Either that or get used to it, I lived in a ghetto Puerto Rican neighborhood in Rochester N.Y. (Clinton Ave.) for one Summer and Ricans love to party, the first week nights I couldnt sleep but eventually I got used to it. I am black so I am not telling a racist story my point is that you should just get used to it and learn to sleep through it. Either that or find another bed to sleep, also you could plug your ears.

  37. QUESTION:
where can I find a naturopathic remedy for snoring?

    • ANSWER:
Did you try breath right strips? Have you been to a doctor? A lot of snoring comes from the disease sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is where you stop breathing in the middle of the night. My Aunt had it. She had to sleep with this ventilator machine. She was a lucky woman. She lived alone so she didn't know she had this disease and she roomed with a nurse that told her she had it. You can die in your sleep.

  38. QUESTION:
    Snoring Question: looking for remedies?
I snore pretty badly at night and was wondering if anyone had some out-of-the box ideas to help this problem. I am open to trying any kind of natural remedies as well.
I have already tried with little to no success the following: Saline nasal spray, various types of breath right strips, and some "natural snoring tablet", which I assume was a placebo.

I have looked into what types of surgical procedures are available, and they all seem to have mixed results

If anyone could offer any advice, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Snoring is one of those things that can be a problem for you and the people around you. If you want to stop snoring, it is important to consider the cause and severity of your snoring. Identifying the cause can help you choose the right cure.
It makes sense to try some simple non-invasive treatments first to see if they'll reduce or prevent your snoring.

Here are some of those non-invasive tips to stop the snoring:

      • sleep on your side - there's a higher change of snoring if you lie on your back, and sleeping on your stomach will kill your neck.
      • keep a regular sleep schedule - and make sure you get enough sleep, many people snore only when they are overly tired
      • elevate your head when sleeping - you can increase the angle of your bed by raising the head of the bed or use pillows to your upper body, don't just raise your head that'll put more pressure on your air way and have the opposite effect.
      • avoid alcohol and tranquillizers - they basically cause the muscles of your jaw and throat to relax, increasing your changes of snoring.
      • Treat your allergies - if your nose is stuffy it may force you to breathe through your mouth when sleeping. If your nose is stuffed I recommend using a netie pot, the are incredibly effective, natural and pretty cheap to.
      • buy a mouth guard - mouth guards will keep your jaw muscles from relaxing too much, and prevent snoring. It may not be too attractive to your significant other but it'll help you both get some sleep! :)
      • Lose weight - when you're heavier the extra weight puts pressure on your airway, causing snoring.
      • if you smoke try to stop - smoking damages your respiratory system, which doesn't help in the snoring department

Excessive snoring may also mean you have a more serious problem like sleep apnea.

If you wake up with a headache, are extremely tired during the day, don't feel refreshed when you wake up, have trouble concentrating or a very low attention span, or wake up during the night choking and gasping for breath you should probably see a doctor.

Mild snoring that isn't related to sleep apnea responds well to home remedies. Finding a cure for your snoring problem can result in an improved quality of life for you and your loved ones.

An effective and pretty simple solution is doing throat exercises, here's a website with interesting information on the snoring exercises: http://www.thestopsnoringexerciseprogram.com/?hop=4safetynow

  39. QUESTION:
is there a remedy for my dogs snoring?
I have a 1 yr old beagle who snores. she used to sleep in the same room with me but it was so loud that i have to put her in another room at night which she hates. any suggestions for stopping or lessening her snoring?

    • ANSWER:
Beagles as a =Breed= are not commonly snorers - which leads me to Q what makes Ur Beagle different from the average.

      ** is she FAT?
overweight = Is = a common Beagle- problem; they've never met a food or anything resembling food, that they didn't like!

look at Ur dog FROM THE SIDE, at about Ur own waist-height; put her on a bench, table, or stairs-landing, so U can get a good look at her whole-body profile.

she SHOULD have a chest that is not more than 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch >>deeper << than the point of her elbow - CLUE: if U can't find the point of her elbow, she is morbidly obese, and her vet should be publicly spanked for letting her get so desperately out of any shape!!

she should have no fat-pad on her chest: it shoud be muscle from upper foreleg across to the other upper foreleg. if there's a wad of loose flesh U can pick up in Ur palm and 'heft', she's way too hefty!

her ribs should not QUITE be visible; they should be just barely seen, as a smooth Xylophone-shape, under a thin layer of MUSCLE. they should be readily PALPABLE: light pressure from Ur fingertips should be enuf to locate each rib. there should be a smooth flat bone, and a narrow 'dip' between it and the next rib. Beagles are smooth-coated, so the ribs should be 'ribbier' in appearance than on a furrier dog, like a GSD or Samoyed.

her BELLY: still looking from the side, at the end of her ribs U should see a smooth line in a curve upwards - that's the underside of her 'waist'. it shouldn't be as exaggerated as a wasp-waist, but she shouldn't resemble a length of pipe (straight line), let alone HANGING Flesh, where the abdomen sags with suet!!

      From Above:

again, put her on a flat surface, and look straight down, from her butt forwards:

her shoulders should be the W I D E S T part of her body, her neck should taper toward her head, her ribs should be narrower than her shoulders, her butt only slightly wider than her ribs at their midpoint. (the widest girth of her ribs should be just behind her elbow- they should taper behind that point to her waist.)

she should have a DISTINCT 'waist': behind her ribs, in front of her hindquarters, there should be a neat little tuck on either side, like parentheses: ) (
her waist should be in proportion to her overall size: not scrawny, but athletic and tight. it's about one and one-third the size of her NECK...
assuming, of course, that her NECK is not fat!!

again from the side, there should be a smooth curve where her rump turns down beside her tail, and forms the back of her upper thigh: )~
if she has a SQUARED-OFF butt when U look from above, '--,--' that's a fat-blanket; i've seen dogs so fat that it looked as tho U could pick up that puckered quilt at the edge, and just peel it off their bodies.

unfortunately, it's not that easy: dogs are even Better!! than humans at maintaining their weight. U have to BOTH decrease calories >In, AND Increase calories

IOW, cut back on food, AND get more exercise.
exercise must be taken with the dog's fitness level always in consideration: U cannot JOG a fat dog on hard surfaces!! a ruptured ACL will not help the dog lose weight.

start out walking further; then walk faster. then walk Both! further AND Faster. Then and only then, JOg the Dog - After the VET says it's Okay, and after weight-loss and some conditioning. And always jog with the dog on a soft surface: U can be on paving, the dog needs the shoulder, grass, sand, what have U.

      ================================

if she's not Fat - then what?
my next guess is stenotic nares: that's what we call nostrils in humans.
well-shaped nares in a dog should look like fat commas, upside-down:
the little tails point up and out from the center, the fat black DOTS are the nice round nostrils.

for good examples of stenotic nares, which look like SLOTS, up and down, instead of nice plump round dots, look at any Boston Terrierist, Pug, Eng Mastiff, or other brachycephalic breed. those are the 'squashed-face' breeds, and they DO Snore - precisely because their sinuses are accordioned up under their eyes, their nares are restricted, and the sinuses behind those nares are also way too narrow.

as a result, they are at extreme risk of heat-stress, or heat-stroke, as compared to 'more normal' dogs with longer muzzles, more sinus, and open nostrils.

solution to stenotic nares: surgery; one-time, permanent fix.

      THIRD possibility:
her soft-palate is too long, and occludes her airway when she relaxes into sleep.
when awake, she has enuf muscle-tension to keep the tissue retracted, at least part of the way; unconscious, it relaxes and blocks the throat.

fix-it: surgery; pretty simple, she gets better rest, and so does everyone else!

      hope this helps!

BTW: crate-training can help with her separation-distress, even at night. a 'bedroom' of ehr very own keeps her calmer, gives her setback from the door (where she might scratch, whine, etc), and gives her a very predictable routine.

once she's not snoring anymore, U can move the crate and Ur Beagle into Ur bedroom at nite; use a fiberglass shipping crate, NOT ! a wire 'show' crate; they are prettier, but less private, less comforting, and less SAFE if U need them to evacuate, keep her at a relative's house, transport or ship her, etc.

shipping crates are also handy for storing her leash ON THE ROOF of the crate:
in an emergency, U know exactly where the dog is, where her gear is, and can grab them in a hurry and get outta Dodge.

  40. QUESTION:
    Any remedy for snoring?
Please respond if you know of any home remedy or over the counter cure for snoring.

    • ANSWER:
Well, my husband is what is called a "heroic" snorer, in which the snoring is so loud it can be heard in other rooms of the house.

"Because you tend to snore more when sleeping on your back, one useful technique is to try to keep from sleeping in that position. One way is to wear a pocket T-shirt backward with a tennis ball in the pocket. You will be less likely to sleep on your back because it is very uncomfortable to sleep on a tennis ball."

Try losing some weight. As little as 10 pounds might make the difference. Avoid alcohol, especially in the 4 hours before going to sleep. Avoid using sedatives and narcotic medications. Alcohol, sedatives, and narcotics cause relaxation of your throat muscles and increase the tendency for airway obstruction related to snoring.

Those should help. The Breath-Rite nasal strips should help. But, in our house, just having the snorer sleep in a different position does the trick!

    Help......stop me snoring!!!!?
Please can any one recommend a snoring remedy for me?? I'm not bothered about it but I think it's going to be a race to see who kills me first....my boyfriend or my housemates!! I've tried nose strips, giving up smoking, losing weight, snoreease throat spray and sleeping on my side but always seem to end up flat on my back and waking the whole house up!!

PS anyone know if certain medications can cause snoring? I've been on 40mg of citalopram for a year or so now...about the same length of time I've been snoring,

    • ANSWER:
well recently i went to the doctor becauseof my snoring. and learned i have sleep apnea. i think that anybody that snores should go. they run all these tests, and they give you this little machine to sleep with at night. they are quiet and prevents your from snoring. it's amazing because it helps you have SOOO much more energy in ther morning and you just feel like a different person. and sometimes when i sleep without it my friends say rarely snore.

and btw if you don't know what sleep apnea is it's when you stop breathing in your sleep for about a 40(sc)-60(sc) or so for about every 30. min. if u want you could do more research. but that may not be your case, just a suggestion.

  44. QUESTION:
remedy for snoring because of nasal congestion?

    • ANSWER:
      You should take antihistamine.

  45. QUESTION:
how can i stop snoring or what is a remedy for strong snoring?

    • ANSWER:
the breathe right strips absolutely help as well as the snore away. the problem can be far more serious so the advice to go to a sleep clinic to be checked for sleep apnea is probably the best advice. however, i know that those types of solutions aren't always financially feasible. it is important to conquer your snoring as you may fail to wake up one morning when a big snore turns into your last breath.
the problem may be the flesh in the back of your throat when you're laying back the fleshiness from your front may meet the fleshiness from your back and result in snoring. weight loss is a possible solution to the problem. another solution could be as easy as chewing gum. chew a few pieces at once in fact. the great big chewing motions you'll have to use will strengthen the fleshiness and hopefully reduce the snoring.
remember the snoring may kill you but if you're content with some hubba bubba you can extend your life a few more nights.

  46. QUESTION:
    Remedy for Snoring............help please !!?
My husband has started snoring like a dinasour since the past few weeks. He refuses to see the doctor and the nasal strip does not help at all.
The snore is not from the nose but more from the throat thats the reason the nasal strip is of no use.
Hot steam also has not help at all.
Can anyone please suggest some remedy that would help as we are now forced to sleep in seperate bedrooms and I really feel terrible about it but at the same time I cannot take it anymore.
    Can someone please help......!
    Thanks.
Rockford he refuses to go to the doctor , getting him hooked to a machine is totally impossible
Earplugs too are not a option for me as I have a infant whom I have to hear for at night

    • ANSWER:
My friend had really, really bad snoring that I refused to go on trips with him. I wore double ear plugs and I still couldn't sleep. It turned out he had sleep apnea and got one of those breathing machines that opened his airways. What an amazing difference. Us guys laugh at him when he brings his "hoover" machine along on trips, but we wouldn't go on those trips if that machine wasn't packed, lol And my friend loves it, because he sleeps better and has more energy in the day.

  47. QUESTION:
How can I stop my cat from snoring?
He seems to have something in his nose, it whistles when he breathes - usually when he's content. And when he's asleep, he snores. Are there any home remedies that MIGHT help him before I fork out for the vet fees?

    • ANSWER:
Hehehe Its probably nothing. My Pixie Girl snores like a bandsaw sometimes. Is his neck twisted around when he does this? Sometimes its just the position of their head/neck and how deeply they are asleep. I forked over money to have Pixie checked and there was nothing wrong with her. I did add a humidifier to our home and seems to ease her some but when shes zonked shes sawing wood louder than my husband does.

He is normal weight (65 kg) and normal height..no smoking and no alcohol...!

      A disease? Um, no.
He may have sleep apnea, which can be indicative of related health issues, so he really should go through a sleep test (polysomnogram). Your ENT can recommend a reliable lab/center.
In the meantime, try Breathe Right strips and/or one of those anti-snoring nasal sprays:
