Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can obstructive sleep apnea be cured by operation? If so is the operation an easy process or is it complicated?

    • ANSWER:
Surgery is normally a last option. CPAP is the primary treatment. There are some types of OSA that need surgery but by far most don't. There are many types of OSA that surgery won't help and I personally know two people who got the surgery (one twice) and it hasn't helped, they are both still on CPAP and have decided it's not so bad afterall. There can be serious complications from throat surgery and virtually no risks with CPAP. I know one who got the surgery and it worked for but he said that the recovery was very unpleseant. I think biblical terms came to mind.
Using a CPAP can take some getting used to but is woth it. I took to it right away because I loved the newfound energy and alertness I received from it.
I was tested and diagnosed with OSA after my wife saw mw stop breathing for more than 30 seconds one night. It turned out I have severe sleep apnea averaging over 90 inteuptions per hour anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute. I never got passed stage two sleep into stages 3 and 4 where your restorative sleep takes place and REM wasn't even on the horizon. It was a split study so the first half of the night, I was tested without any assistance. The second half was with a CPAP controlled by the tech in the control room. When I woke up the next morning after getting just 3 1/2 hours of quality sleep, I was on cloud nine ready to do everything I could find time to do!
I'm actually going in for a test this evening to see if after 2 1/2 years there needs to be any adjustments in my pressure, I've begun snoring through the CAPA a little now and then. Tonight will be with CPAP all night as I have learned that I now don't sleep without the CPAP. We had a power failure recently and I just couldn't sleep well at all. I've come to love my CPAP and travel with it.
If CPAP will work for you, I would not even consider doing surgery.

  2. QUESTION:
How can I naturally cure sleep apnea?
    Any help will be appreciated

    • ANSWER:
If it is obstructive sleep apnea that is caused by excess weight then the trick is to lose weight. If it is sleep apnea caused by an issue with your airway...then there is no natural cure except for surgery. And surgery is not always the answer either.

  3. QUESTION:
can i be cured of sleep apnea through surgury?

    • ANSWER:
The most probable answer is no. The success rates of the surgery is very poor and very invasive. Most of my pts that I have treated with cpap have complained that if they had known it wouldn't work they would have never done it. They wound up on cpap anyways. Cpap is the only proven effective treatment for sleep apnea. I wouldn't recommend the surgery. I have answered many similar questions if you want more details check out my Q&A's . Good luck

  4. QUESTION:
How did I get sleep apnea? Can it be cured? What did I do to get this suddenly?
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 3 years ago out of the clear blue sky. I was 38 years old and never had any major health problems. From what I read it is hereditary but no one in my family has this. I hear it could lead to stroke, heart attack, etc. How in the world could such a disease just come out of the clear blue sky!!!! I am totally confused and need to know how to CURE this disease!!!!!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Depends on how it developed...much sleep apnea is caused by being overweight (not assuming anything about you, just making a statement), losing weight in that case, could "cure" (for lack of better words) the apnea. If the reasoning behind your apnea is something that is controllable, then it is much easier to correct once the "issue" is corrected. Cure (if any) is based on cause.

  5. QUESTION:
    Can surgery cure sleep apnea?
I know that you can use those air tanks and use dental devices, but is surgery a full proof option?

    • ANSWER:
it is not fool proof, but it can help depending on what is causing the problem.

  6. QUESTION:
Are their sleep apnea cures that can be bought over the counter?
I have found out that I have a condition called sleep apnea, this is causing problems in my marriage and also making me very depressed. for one I have no drive to do anything and I sleep almost all day possibly trying to make up for the lost of sleep from the night before. This has recently gotten this bad and now my husband has started complaining about the fact that all I do is sleep.I really hurts my feelings. I have no idea what is taking the doctors office so long to make me an appointment for a sleep study but I am trying to see if their is something that I can do in the mean time. Are their any thing I can buy that actually work I have tried the nasal strips and they are no good. what would be some good over the counter objects. I would like for both of us to have a good nights rest.

    • ANSWER:
I have very severe sleep apnea.

I added more at the end so read it

This is as the other person said a very serious disorder..it can cause stroke or heart attack and death,

For now, raise the head of your bed, about 6 inches with wood blocks or maybe bricks or buy a pillow wedge (the board is less hard on one's back then the pillow wedge).

Also this is what they tell you to do till you get on a c-pap or bi-pap
make a pocket on the back of your pajama top and sew tennis balls into them. When one sleeps on their back, it makes sleep apnea worst and more likely to occur. In your sleep if you roll on your back the tennis balls will cause you to get back onto your side or stomach.

Be sure to ask the doctor for an auto bipap machine and not a c-pap or bi-pap.

My sleep apnea went years I suspect unnoticed as I had never heard of it but my father had it but we did not know about it then..I just remember my mother saying he would stop breathing all the time when asleep. My son who is overweight was found to be not breathing over 100 times an hour and had very severe apnea. Thank goodness he listened to me and got tested as he did not have the typical side effects like depression and fatigue.

After I got on treatment, I feel no better..continually fatigued and depressed, I am still battling both these in fact. The only difference I noticed was the morning headaches went away..plus I have 2 other sleep disorders.

Then they lowered my pressure based on one sleep study even though I told them they were wrong..for 3 years I tried to get another study and finally got one and they said I was getting almost no REM or stage 3/4 restorative sleep. I am certain this is the cause of much of my severe and unrelenting depression...even though I sleep 7 or 8 hours, it is the same as getting an hour of sleep a night for the past 25 years..I have traced nearly everything I have, mentally, emotionally and physically to sleep deprivation.

They raised the pressure again to 16 which is as high as the machine went. I faithfully wore the uncomfortable mask every night but still felt like crap. On my last sleep study a few years ago, they told me I had PLMD and that I needed a pressure of 17 (my old machine had broken and I was trying to get a new one),

Thankfully around that time I found the excellent sleep forum cpaptalk

      http://www.cpaptalk.com/CPAP-Sleep-Apnea-Forum.html?sid=2245f6225edf5ee091ce311dfc5b66eb

it was there people told me about automatic bi pap machines which automatically adjust themselves nightly to your apnea. I also found out I was probably mouth breathing and still having apnea and got a full face mask. I also had a very long tube to the machine as I did not want it by my head but found out long tubes are not good so I started using a shorter tube about 5-6 feet.

Luckily I was able to convince my sleep doctor to get me the auto-bipap. I discovered I was having apneas still needing pressures as high as 24 pressure (extremely severe apnea) which is as high as the machine goes. The only days I feel a little better or when I sleep for 13-14 hours. Had I listened to the doctor and gotten the pressure he prescribed 18, I would not have been fixed maybe several more years as I was having nearly all of them at at least 20 pressure.

I have no clue what else to do. It is destroying my life.

I recently a --another puzzle piece in my long puzzling journey-- in the last 3 weeks. I had for two years a feeling like a lump in the throat. It eventually got so uncomfortable I started coughing and choking so I sought medical help and they ordered a ultrasound of the thyroid which showed nodules so I had a biopsy to rule out cancer While there I insisted the biopsy doctor talk to me and told him my symptoms.

He said I do not think your problem is your thyroid. i think you have laryngopharyngeal reflux. (LPR), (silent reflux)..I was shocked and said I never have any stomach problems or heartburn. he said no there are different kinds and some do not cause heartburn.

In looking up the symptoms I discovered I had most of them including coughing tons of phlegm which plagued my for 2 decades at least...when I went to bed especially, I would have coughing fits where I coughed so hard I could not catch my breath and threw my back out.they lasted 5 or 6 hours. i thought I had chronic bronchitis..then a doctor said I had rhinitis and allergies...we thought to mold as when I left I discovered mold under the carpet. It stopped but returned when I moved and they tore out the sink and tub to remodel and replaced the cabinets etc. leaving a layer of dust everywhere a 1/2 inch thick..I started wheezing and choking and broke out into eczema for the first time ever. I thought maybe there was mold behind the tub or something..Finally it went away..I moved again and then it started coming back,.the doctor said I had post nasal drip she thought,

finally I got an upper gi test three weeks ago and it showed I had very severe reflux...they call it silent reflux cause it burns and damage the esophagus causing more harm but you do not know it as it has no warning signs like acid reflux.

One day 2 weeks ago, I I was lying down and my throat so clogged up with clear phlegm that I could not breathe at all and had to jump up to breathe..It was then it hit me.

  8. QUESTION:
What are natural cures for sleep apnea?
The guy I work for is 90 years old, his family doesnt want to "waste" the extra cash on him for the tests ect. He's definately got sleep apnea ive seen it before. will Vervain help? any other natural treatments i can pay for outta my own pocket for him?

    • ANSWER:
Obstructive sleep apnea in elderly is treated symptomatically very successfully by the use of CPAP(continuous positive airway pressure) machine. This is an expensive machine but is worth the expense. Person has to use this machine everyday through the night where the machine maintains an optimal breathing pressure and the patient does not get choked because of sleep apnea nor is his sleep disturbed. It is best to consult a Pulmonologist (respiration specialist). The family of the patient does not want to spend the money is a serious problem. You may look for funding from voluntary organisations or health agencies who work for the elderly depending upon where you live. You are doing a good cause and people will support you on this. Hats off to you.

  9. QUESTION:
    Tonsillectomy to cure sleep apnea
I have enlarged tonsils and when I look at my throat in the mirror I can see how the tonsils and uvula come together to create a blockage when I simulate snoring. I am scheduled for a tonsillectomy and UPPP in 8 weeks. Would this likely fix (or at least greatly improve) my sleep apnea since my tonsils are enlarged?

  10. QUESTION:
Have I just found the cure for Sleep Apnea?
I suffer from sleep apnea, and I use a CPAP device to sleep at night. This device records an AHI, an apnea index. Normally, that index is around 5.0 for an average night for me. Last night, I took cough syrup - a Chinese brand, it says "Traditional Chinese Herbal Cough Syrup" on the box, and a name I can't read, because it's in Chinese. Guess what happened: For the first time ever, the AHI index read "0.0" in the morning. I was flabbergasted. Have I just discovered the cure for sleep apnea? Is it possibly one of the ingredients?

This is what's in it, according to a supplied ingredients list:

    Tendrilleaf Fritillary Bulb
    Loquat Leaf
    Fourleaf Ladybell Root
    Indian Bread
    Pummelo Peel
    Platycodon Root
    Prepared Pinellia Tuber
    Chinese Magnoliavine Fruit
    Snakegourd Seed
    Common Coltsfoot Flower
    Thinleaf Milkwort Root
    Bitter Apricot Seed
    Fresh Ginger
    Liquorice Root
    Almond Extract
    Menthol
    Honey
    Maltose
    Syrup

    • ANSWER:
I tried to find information on the listed ingredients, and found this:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nin_Jiom_Pei_Pa_Koa

I think it is your cough syrup, or at least a similar one.

"A study at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine published in a 1994 article, "Pharmacological studies of nin jion pei pa koa", indicated that Pei Pa Koa had significant effect on relieving coughs, removing sputum, relieving asthma in vivo and in vitro[2]."
So, this stuff has been looked at, and found helpful. If it cures your apnea, go for it! To me, it sounds somewhat dangerous - all of the ingredients I found on Wikipedia are listed as poisonous plants...
But most medicines are more or less toxic, so that shouldn't stop you if it's really helping you.

  11. QUESTION:
    Cures for Sleep Apnea?
A friend of mine has suffered for years with sleep apnea. He has followed all the medical advice for solving the problem.
From loosing weight to using c-pap etc.

Are there any other ideas anyone has that has worked for them that I can pass on to him.
    ???

    Please help!
My friend is down to under 150 lbs. So there is no obesity issue for him.

Also he is very current on doctor visits due to other health related issues. Therefore, further doctor visits will not help.

He is/was just wanting to hear about other methods that helped others in his situation with sleep apnea.

    • ANSWER:
CPAP should be the most effective treatment for sleep apnea, but many patients can't tolerate the CPAP therapy because they don't know how to choose the best mask for their face. This is the key to a good treatment with CPAP.

Dental devices can help many patients with sleep apnea, as long as they have a large tongue or large adenoids and tonsils.

Surgery is another option: tonsillectomy is for large tonsils, UPPP is for large uvula, bariatric surgery is for obesity.

Before choosing these treatments, your friends need to speak with his doctor.

For patients with mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnea, positional therapy can be very helpful. Here is a good site where you can learn more about:

  13. QUESTION:
Sleep apnea...Is there a cure for this and do the Doctors take this seriously?
my husband snores like a pnematic drill, always tired during the day and has the classic symptoms of this disorder, he wakes up coughing more times than i can count...he is although a bit over weight so i'm not sure if the Doc will take this seriously? Any advice welcome thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Sleep Apnea is SERIOUS...it is a breathing problem!!!

Dont suffer from it myself but have relatives who do.

Tell your hubby to go see his Doctor.
They should refer him to a specialist who can suggest a suitable treatment.

I have heard of some who undergo surgery to open up blocked nasal passages, and others who use some sort of mask over their nose as they sleep.

I'm sure there will be other treatment options available as well.

Hubby is constantly tired because his body is working sooo much harder to take in oxygen he requires to breathe and therefore not getting the rest he needs as part of everyday sleep.

Some people even stop breathing for short periods...and wake up gasping for breath!!!

Tell him to seek treatment NOW!

  15. QUESTION:
    tonsil-ectomy and obstructive sleep apnea?
I beleive i have obstructive sleep apnea, thats what it feels like when i wake up-like the top of my throat is being blocked. i have heard having your tonsils and adenoids removed can "cure" this. has anyone had this procedure or knows of any articles relating to it? i have had this for years and think my health would be MUCH better if i were to be able to "cure" it.

also, i am overweight but didn't used to be and still had sleep apnea. will a doctor require me to lose weight before i get this surgery?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi, Jessica!

You said that you are overweight, but you didn't used to be. Well, this is one of the many side effects of sleep apnea. If you are skinny, but you have sleep apnea, you can be overweight in the future.

And you know what? Your throat may be blocked because of the fat stored in your neck. So, maybe you give a chance to your tonsils and try instead to loose weight. You can use a CPAP to help you breathe in the night.

  17. QUESTION:
I’m very fatigue and have been diagnosed with narcolepsy and sleep apnea. Can you help?
I have been so tired for the last ten years. My testosterone is 150 and should be over 600. I’ve been to a lot of doctors from endocrinologist to sleep disorder doctors. I use a CAP and I’m on or have tried hormone replacement, stimulates, and specialty medications for narcolepsy. I don’t feel depressed but have tried several antidepressants. I’m sure most people’s advice would be to exercise. I wish I had the energy to exercise. I’m very lucky because I’m not overweight and most people think I work out. I’ve had friends tell me I’ve got to make myself exercise but they don’t understand that my energy level is about that of someone who has not sleep in days. I only work a few days a week and I have to take stimulates to be able to stay awake to work. I want to be a normal human and have normal energy before I sleep my life away. Has anyone ever felt this way and found a cure? Anyone know a particular doctor in the Dallas Texas area that is known for dealing with this issue? I would appreciate it more that you will ever know.

I now since having children 3yrs ago have started to have major energy issues some days are fine others I go a week or two feeling tired all the time. Every time I go in they find something new as listed above. I have been diagnosed with all 3 diseases in the last 3 years and even with proper treatment am still have energy issues. I cant help but wonder that they are all related. Any Doctors out there who like to problem solve...I just cant believe I have 3 conditions that cause fatigue and am only 29 and healthy weight 5'8 145lbs and atop of all this am still not cured. I just want my energy so I can play with my girls. Im sick of it.
I am on an APAP and my leak rate is 0 and Im doing quite well with treatment.

My TSH levels are in the normal range - I have recently switched to another sciprt (Thyrolar) wich will treat my T3 and T4 indvidually vs treating the T3 to help the T4 to see if that helps with the fatigue and my levels were checked a few days ago no results yet but Im guessing theyll be normal since its the equivalent amount that I had for my Levoxyl.

Due to the fatigue seeming after I eat at times they did a fasting and reactive test which showed I was in the ? I thnk it was the 40s but after I ate my levels were fine (low 100s) Told me to eat protein with my carbs. 19. QUESTION:
    Yuck...I'm having surgery...?
In March I'm having UPPP surgery. It stands for uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, and it's throat surgery. I'm having this in hopes to cure my sleep apnea (it's really severe--I'm not overweight, but I have a lot of excess throat tissue--it's a genetic defect). They will be taking out my tonsils as well as the remains of my adenoids (I originally had them removed when I was 6, but they grew back partially). They will also trim my soft palate and remove most of my uvula.

I've talked this over with three different doctors and all think that this is a good thing to do, as do I. The drawback is that it's only a 50-50 chance at curing me, otherwise I'll have to use a BiPAP machine for the rest of my life.

What are some possible side effects from this, if you know someone who has had it? I've been warned by each doctor that the recovery period is a minimum of two weeks and it can easily be 2 months before I'm back to normal...
Okay, thanks. I'm 17 if it helps.

    • ANSWER:
My friend had this a few years ago. The pain the few few days was bad. Any motion caused pain and that's hard to avoid! (swallowing and such) You are also on total voice rest, I believe, for the first few days after surgery for the same reason. My friend later developed a granuloma at the surgical site that led to more voice rest and down-time. All that said she's glad she had it done.

  20. QUESTION:
I have insomnia and i am so tired of taking pills to sleep at night. is there anything i can do to cure it?
i use to be able to sleep on my own years ago until i started taking seroquel now i cant sleep without it. its like its my sleeping brain pill to help me sleep and if i dont take it i cant sleep. i been to hospitals and nobody can help me because some doctors say that i dont have sleep apnea

    • ANSWER:
I JUST went through the same problem you're going through right now (and not being a doctor), I can only tell you what worked for me.

I stopped taking sleep-aid pills (over the counter and prescription). (BEFORE you do this, you should tell your doctor. It's important.) Next, I drew up a sleep log. I wrote down (everyday for a couple weeks) exactly what I did/drank/ate/watched on television within four hours of bedtime. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it REALLY helped me understand things I was doing to sabotage my sleep. Next, I took the sleep log and took out things that were keeping me awake. For example, my log went from this:

      8pm - have a few drinks
      9pm - go for a jog
10pm - play video games and eat popcorn
      11pm - go to bed

      ... to this:

      6pm - go for a jog
      7pm - dinner/drinks
      8pm - play video games
      9pm - take a bath
      10pm - read a book
      11pm - go to bed

I've spoken with about a half dozen doctors about my insomnia (which was very severe), and they all say the same things:
      - Don't eat or drink alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime. Also, cut way back on soda or anything that has caffeine. Try to not have anything like that after noon.
      - Daily exercise HELPS make you sleepy (so definitely do it!), but do NOT do it within 4 hours of bedtime (otherwise, it will give you an energy BOOST).
      - Do something that is calming starting two hours before bed. These activities could include reading, writing, watching a calming movie/show, knitting, taking a shower/bath...
      - When you're doing these pre-bedtime activities, turn the lights down a little.
      - Drink tea with lavender and/or chamomile.
      - Make sure your room is slightly cool, NOT HOT.
      - Make sure your room is dark and quiet. Cover up windows and remove ticking clocks. Most important of all, turn your alarm clock away from you. Watching the time go by does NOT help sleep-seekers. Neither does the bright, neon light coming from the clock.
      - Make sure your uncomfortable mattress isn't the problem.
      - Have the SAME routine EVERY DAY. Your body will get used to the routine so that every time you take a bath, for instance, it knows it's time for bed.
      - Don't watch TV at bedtime. The light from the TV disrupts your sleeping.
      - Have a partner? Orgasms help. Don't have a partner? Orgasms still help.

If you do all these things and are not seeing results (give it a few weeks), take the sleep log to a doctor. Tell them what you've done. They might suggest more/different medication, or they might send you to someone who specializes in cognitive behavior therapy. (CBT is psychological in nature and will touch on these "sleep hygiene" techniques like I've mentioned along with many, many other things I haven't delved into like unrealistic sleep expectations and misconceptions about insomnia.)

I'm sorry this turned into such a book of an answer, but I hope it helps! Best wishes for good dreams!

  24. QUESTION:
Does excess Biotin cause weight gain?
I'm an 6'2 18 year old fit male. Held several weightlifting records at my high school, never been overweight. At my peak I was a healthy 190 pounds. This was summer 2010

In early February 2011 I had a tonsillectomy for sleep apnea (which I had for 2.5 years) ever since then Ive went from 185 pounds to 215 (April 20 2011). I'm trying to figure out my weight gain causes.

I was about 195 pounds in late march 2011 which was okay because I was putting on a lot of muscle mass from being able to sleep well for the first time in 2 years. However I also accidentally started taking double the recommended dose of Biotin in around March 30th. (This happened because I took a Biotin supplement for the max daily limit which is okay however at the same time my multivitamin had the max daily limit as well so I was taking about 2x the daily limit for around 20 days. )

I don't know if my weight gain is simply because my body is confused because of all the improved sleep i've been getting from not having apnea, thus causing my body to want to eat more to catch up on 2.5 years of no growth or if the Biotin is causing an increase in appetite.

I'm eating about 6 meals a day which are all average sized. I don't eat fast food, don't drink and don't smoke. I go to bed every night at 10:30 and get out of bed to go to school at 7:30. This is true 7 days a week. I'm really concerned with my nighttime hunger because it is causing me to wake up at least 3x a night. For instance I eat 2 eggs pasta and a sandwhich before bed (10:00pm) so I can stay asleep without waking up. At 2:00 am I wake up hungry again and eat a thick sandwhich. At 4:00am I wake up again and eat another thick sandwhich. And then I usually wake up around 5:30 again but I'm too exhausted to go make food and even eat it so I go back to sleep and wake up in 30-45 min increments due to hunger until 7:30 am...

Its annoying because Ive suffered 2 years of obstructed sleep apnea and after curing it by removing my tonsils I and am still waking up every night. (Haven't slept more than 4 hours in a row since 2008.)

Lastly, I am going to try to see a doctor but I'm taking 21 credits this semester and am swamped in finals/papers for the next two weeks. Aside from that I have a stupid HMO (not my choice) insurance which takes about a month to make an appointment. Additionally I have lost a lot of respect for doctors since they it took 6 different doctors to diagnose me properly for apnea (was misdiagnosed with depression, anxiety, and a few other things before they got it right) . I'd rather have someone whose been in my situation tell me what they did, and try out their recommendation before I go to a doctor.

Thanks so much for anyone who has the time to read and answer this.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t think excessive biotin would cause that kind of a problem. As far as I am aware it is water soluble and most of the excess will be passed out in urine. If anything it should help burn fat as is used to metabolise foods.

Your diet and sleeping pattern are most likely to blame. People often over eat without realising. Count the calories for an “average” day and see if much above your required intake. You are eating too many carbs in my opinion. Don’t eat any pasta or breads etc after 6-8 pm as they are not used for energy and more likely to be stored as fat. So have meals at night’s higher fat and protein.

I don’t know what supplements you can take in America but in the UK we can get something called 5 HTP and it works wonders for sleep and stress but also reduce appetite, but check with doctors if things like that are ok to take. Hope that helped

  25. QUESTION:
my bf is a snorer...it's driving me bananas!!..are sleep doctors expensive?
I'm literally going insane with his snoring...it's like sleeping next to a big broken truck reving up...in fact it's probably more annoying...and i've been with him more than 3 years...i'm a light sleeper too...it seems the only time I could sleep through the night is if I've consumed alcohol or sleeping pills or I've been so sleep deprived therefore so exhausted on the 3rd or fourth day that i would completely knock out....and then the cycle would start again...i try not to take sleeping pills because it makes me feel woozy the next day...

Nothing has helped...he quit smoking for a year now....he is a drinker..but he doesnt drink everyday...i don't know if that's the case....he is a social drinker so i dont think he'll quit completely...but if he was to go a month without drinking...it woudl sound just as loudly as if he did...sleeping on his side doesn't help either....he is a tad bit overweight...but it's just a little...i do make him nwork out..and it's helped like a tiny teeny bit....

I think he does have sleep apnea because he would sometimes stop breathing for like 15-20 seconds and then snore really loud afterwards...I know i should sleep in another room but i dont like sleeping by myself...and really i don't like sleeping without him either

I called a couple of doctors today and they are expensive...consultations by itself is 200...and than it ranges from 800-2400 afterwards...he does have insurance but still that's still expensive...

I just want to know if there are any alternatives that is cheaper and that works!...I'm so desperate...and also does sleep apnea correlate with premature ejaculation?? while sleeping he's deprived of oxygen right??..i wonder if that relates.....He's never gone longer than two minutes, a lot of times it could be like 15 or 30 seconds...although he's never had a problem getting hard...or getting hard again...

lastly he works out pretty well since i got him into it....and his body has toned up a bit...he was never flabby to begin with...but now u can see some minor definition....but like i said he has been working out for a year..i figured his body should be more developed...his friends that work out with him have all sculpted out a muscular body...although they are thinner though...he works out about 5 times a week...about 1 hour to 2 hours each time...i wonder if sleep apnea is hindering his body's ability to build those muscles as well??

I do love him but we need to cure his snoring problem...i don't know how much longer i can take this....

    • ANSWER:
Ok. Classic symtoms of sleep apnea. This is a semi-serious problem. The doc will prescribe him a c-pap machine. Google it.

If he'll use the thing, he and you are very likely to sleep much better, and consequently, feel and function much better. But, he'll still snore when not using the gadget.

There may be a fix for the cause of his snoring. Google for that too, and check with a ear, nose, throat (ENT) doc.

Down side is he's got to be willing to cooperate.

  26. QUESTION:
Are there Philippine doctors specializing in remedies for apnea?
My expat friend can hardly sleep, pounding away on his keyboard. He seemed so angry. My research tells me he might be suffering from a sleep disorder called apnea. Help, he needs to be cured, or he might just burn out.
@twin brah : while you were sleeping, the expats were accusing you left and right of cloning them, I had to rise in the mid of the night to defend our family's honor, to show them you have not been annihilated, as they were all declaring. Pretty much like Gaddafi's son has been captured, only to later show himself in public. Nice of you to show your handsome face.

    • ANSWER:
I had sleep disorder before, and I went to Medical City (in Mandaluyong). There, I was ordered by the doctor to stay for the night in a room that resembles most bedrooms. Not a typical hospital suite. It was designed to be restful because the tests are done to monitor sleeping habits, breathing, etc under normal conditions. To best approximate normal conditions, the patient can even sleep with his/her spouse.

The only difference versus sleeping at home is that there are wires attached to the different body parts. A technician is on duty in a one-way booth (you are told about this beforehand). Like a CT Scan, several indicators are monitored, all relating to sleeping.

I forgot the doctor's name. But definitely, with such facility, they would have the best sleep disorder doctors in the country.

  27. QUESTION:
I have to make an important decision--Surgery?
I have a pretty major decision to make regarding surgery. I am 17 years old and although I am not overweight (I am 5'11 and 160 pounds, muscular build) I have sleep apnea. I've got it pretty badly--in a sleep study I did a few weeks ago, I averaged 7 times an hour in which I stopped breathing (for 8 hours a night, that equals an average of 56 times in one night!) and each time, my oxygen level fell to 73 (which is very low). As a result, my doctor referred me to an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat doctor). I had the appointment today, and the results were that my tonsils are insanely large (almost twice the size they should normally be), my adenoids have grown back (I had them removed when I was 6, but apparently the damn things came back!), and my uvula (little dangly thing in the back of your throat) is gargantuan.

The ENT gave me these options:
    1. Have the surgery to take out the adenoids, tonsils, and most of my uvula (if not the whole thing). The issue is that it's only a 50/50 chance that the surgery will make a major difference in my apnea and actually cure it. It's almost certain that it will help, but only a 50% chance that it will majorly help me. I would be out for about a week and a half to 2 weeks, including no work, no school (not that big of an issue for me...I've got senioritis already), no driving, etc. Basically being homebound for 2 weeks. That, and this surgery will cost several thousand dollars.

    2. Don't have the surgery and instead go straight to a CPAP or BiPap machine (breathing machine to use at night to provide air pressure to keep my airway open so that I can breathe somewhat normally). This will not cure my apnea in any way, but it will make it manageable. It's not a cure, just a treatment device. This also won't keep my apnea from getting worse in the future as the surgery could. This machine will also cost a few thousand dollars.

    3. Don't have the surgery or the machine, but continue life the way it is. I really don't want to do this (I am exhausted almost all the time) and I want the problem to be fixed, but this one doesn't cost any money--money which we may soon not have (my dad works for GM...'nuff said).

I know it's my decision (and my family's) in the long run, but I really need advice on this. This is a life-changing decision, and if I don't treat this it can and probably will kill me later in my life. Honestly I'm leaning towards #1 because that could actually fix the problem--#2 would just give me a machine which would help, but not fix the root problem. I figure if I'm 'broken' I should have the surgery to 'fix' it, not just something to help but still be broken.

What do you think? I really need advice...

    • ANSWER:
My first inclination is to tell you to go with the surgery. Still, because it is such a hugh decision, have you considered getting a second and third opinion? Go with the dominant recommendation.
      The very best to you.

  29. QUESTION:
Medical question re: dodmerb and the armed services?
My son is 15 and super intent on going military. We have been looking at academies and senior military colleges. My big concern is this: he was diagnosed with sleep apnea at a very young age. I have seen nowhere that this in itself is disqualifying. Is it? In addition, he is very interested in getting mandibular advancement surgery to help cure the apnea so he won't have to deal with it in the military. My concern is that the surgery itself could be disqualifying. Any answers out there? If he can't go military, I don't know what he'll do with himself! It's all he wants!
Thanks, Justin. My understanding is that there is a big difference between diagnoses before you enter the service, and those diagnoses that occur once you're in service. Also, our experience is that the local recruiters tell you what they think you want to hear. Any more info out there?
Thank you, "Boats". This is the clearest answer we've received, though a little discouraging. If I may ask: does that apply to all branches? Also, what is your background in this area? Thanks again!

  30. QUESTION:
    A simple question about?
I was at the hospital and I do have sleep apnea due to my excessive weight I gained from depression over the year. They provided me with a sleep mask, but I refused because I know I can lose weight safe and fast since I've been active throughout my entire life during high school football, wrestling and track till this depression started which caused me to gain weight and that's when my trouble breathing started, so is it safe for me to lose weight to cure my apnea instead of using the mask temporarily while I trey to lose weight ?

Reason: I don't want to rely on a mask until I can lose the weight.

    • ANSWER:
The mask is only going to HELP you loose weight. I gained weight due to diabetes and then I became tired all the time, doctors tried to tell me it was depression but I wasn't unhappy, just tired! Finally a doctor ordered a sleep test and they found that I had sleep apnea. The mask itself sucks, but you get used to it. At first I didn't notice a difference but after a month I can really tell. I have a lot more energy and therefore I am working out more and starting to notice a change in my weight. I really think a mask will only HELP you, not hurt you, so why not try it! Good Luck !!

  31. QUESTION:
Is there help for the parent portion of a FAFSA student loan?
A lot has happened in my family since I started college. The situation our economy is in now has been a reality for my family for a while. Mainly because my dad up until last summer had been working at GM for 32 years. He had the option to retire with a small buyout or be assigned a new job and half his pay. Along with this our health-care has changed quite a bit. Last year we were allowed 5 doctor visits the entire year for a family of 4..... This year our insurance no longer covers doctors visits and we have a 0 deductible so basically I can't go to the doctor unless I'm dying. So now I have a knee that I cannot stand straight on without pain, acid reflux that I've had constantly for almost 10 years, and a mole that is changing and I'm SOL. After this semester of college I will have one more in the fall before I graduate. My sister is in the last semester of a 5 year nursing program too. At this moment we have just under 0,000 in loan debt between the two of us. Basically the loans my parents took out are getting ridiculous. The monthly payment is about 0, and that doesn't include the 0 in interest that ac-cured this year. I am already a full time student (13 hrs) with two jobs (i have a campus job 8 - 12 hrs a week, and an internship/part-time job on nights for 20-25 hrs). Right now I make just enough to get by on (not enough to eat right) in combination with the small my fiancee makes working at her daycare (she is in her first transfer year of an education degree and is in a worse off financial situation than we are, I can only hope she will be able to finish school).

Basically me and my sister are going to have to work more now so I will be a full-time student and employee. The next problem is that my dad is trying to find a job at 60, but nobody will hire him. My mom worked for Sprint for 35 years, and now works at their local phone split off Embarq. They were recently bought by another company and my dad says she has been quiet a lot lately and telling him he needs to find a job. Basically she might be losing her job too. The house they are in needs a lot of work and that is what my dad has been TRYING to do. We have an old RV they may live in if they have to but that is a last resort obviously. Right now school is the last thing on my mind. I'm constantly thinking about money and how I'm going to be in debt until I retire, how I'm going to be able to pay for everything, my loans, my parent's loans, all on a job around ,000 (if that and even If I can get a job) after I graduate.

I don't know what to do. I'm stressed, depressed for sure, and I've never seen my parents like this. Neither of my parents went to college and had been at the same job all their lives busting their ass just for me and my sis to go to school and it's all turning around and biting them in the ass. It makes me wish I had never gone to school. I would be so much happier just working and living and not worrying about huge amounts of debt. Another great thing is that GM discontinued scholarships to employee dependents to cut costs (they have their mind in the right direction, give up on the future). We relied on these scholarships for books. I can't get any scholarships because my parents combined were always just under that 0,000 mark but it never took into account my dad was working 60 hours a week for two years and he developed sleep apnea. I just have lost all hope of a happy life. I'm set out to be a peasant just like my parents were, with nobody giving a damn. I hate all these college students who take everything they have for granted, never knowing the hardships people go through. This is what our land of opportunity offers us, a lifetime of debt and taxes. It would be such a relief to just kill myself and not have to live every day as a struggle. My relationship with my fiancee is starting to dwindle because I'm so depressed and can't remember what love felt like. We hardly see eachother, I never see my friends, I have a POS car that doesn't run half the time....... What's the point of life if you can't enjoy it. Does nobody see the rest of the world and what really happens or are they all really that ignorant and selfish? Sorry about this, but does anyone know if there is any help out there?

    • ANSWER:
Go to your college financial aid office and tell them about your dad's job loss. Please be specific and make an appointment with the paperwork to support your claim.

  33. QUESTION:
how do i stop snoring naturally?
its really embarrassing, and last year i didn't go to the school trip because of my snoring. im only 13 years old. my brother and my dad snores too, apart from my sister and mum. i probally got it from my dad. ive been reasearching, nothing helped. i sleep on my side. i sleep with mouth closed. im not overweight, i dont smoke, i dont drink. i do basicly everything what i reserached said. the only thing i learnt was not to eat late at night. plzz tell me some proper excises which i can do with my throats or necks or somthing like that, ive got a trip comming up and i really want to go. i may have sleeping apnea, but if theres a way to cure dat then tell me now!!!! PLLZz som1 with some proper answers plz help me!!!! lol :D im desperate

    • ANSWER:
Most people snore occasionally, some because they are overweight (the fat compresses on the throat and makes it hard for the air to travel through the windpipe) some because the tongue slips back blocking the opening to the windpipe (this is usually caused when you sleep on your back)
so if you are overweight - hit the gym, if not you can sew a golf ball into the back of your PJ tops so you won't lie on your back, if you happen to roll over in the night you will just roll back again, your body will get used to not sleeping on your back and eventually you just won't do it.

You can always go to the doctor and get checked out to see if there's any medical problems.

  34. QUESTION:
does anyone know any alternative health cures/treatment for periodic limb movement disorder?
I was just diagnosed and afraid to take the drug they recommended due to it influencing dopamine levels and potential for hallucinations and severe obsessions with gambling, sex, overeating, and shopping. there are lawsuits against the company for these life wrecking side effects.

I have been sleep deprived nearly 25 years and on bipap/cpap for 15 with little abatement of the many health effects. I am finanlly starting to get some of the errors made in treating sleep apnea corrected but it will be in vain if I can't get the PLMD under control. I think they said I did it 175 times in less than 6 hours and weach time disrupts your sleep.

I have not been able to find much alternatively since my diagnosis three days ago. I was considering dopamine raising herbs..anything else? )it is sometimes treated similarly to restless leg syndrome although it is a different thing..involuntary and under sleep unlike restless leg which is when awake and asleep. Dopamine also is related to
Parkinson, another involuntary movement disorder. I am so scared of the medical drugs but also hanging on by a thread from severe sleep deprivation for so long.

  35. QUESTION:
    Can you cure me?
I have autoimmune hepatitis, low white blood cells, diabetes, no thyroid(lost to Grave's disease), arthritis, sleep apnea, and anemia. What is wrong with me? Where do I go for help? They can't all just be 'flukes!'

    • ANSWER:
A rheumatologist might be able to help you. Autoimmune diseases tend to occur together, which would explain the Graves and the hepatitis, and possibly the diabetes and the arthritis. The low white blood cells and the anemia could be related to that, too, or they could be related to treatment you've received. Sleep apnea is pretty common, especially if you have gained weight as a result of any of these problems or their treatment. So some if not all of these things could be related. Consulting a rheumatologist might help you figure out the connections and the best treatment. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

  36. QUESTION:
Will curing G.E.R.D. have a very large impact on breathing problems?
I have been considering Nissen fundoplication surgery for my hiatal hernia, and would like to hear from people that have already had this done. I want to know, specifically, if this surgery improved any of the respitory conditions associated with GERD.

Also, will this place any restrictions on my pilot certificate?

Here is a crap load of background about me:

At one point I had done everything the doctor told me, including eliminating food from my diet that aggravates the condition, loosing weight until I was within the "healthy" parameters for my age/height/fitness, altered my sleep angle, and was on Nexium, Previcid, and Gaviscon. All of these actions helped the condition, but did not eliminate the symptoms. In fact, the symptoms were still so bad, that I gave up on the treatments.

I have been suffering from G.E.R.D. for my entire life, as I was born with a hiatus hernia. I also have hyperhydrochlorhydria, which aggravates the gastroesophageal reflux disease, as well as causing Gastritis and similar symptoms in the lower GI tract.

As well as the common symptoms of G.E.R.D., I have also been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis as a child, and then later diagnosed with asthma as an adult. (it is believed that G.E.R.D. can cause asthma)

The spasms in my stomach as well as the acid levels have been much higher lately due to some increased stress. These increases have led to Laryngopharyngeal reflux, which seems to be causing sleep apnea like symptoms.

Once I can aford health insurance, I'll happily go through the same process where the physician and specialists tell me to change my diet, lose weight, take drugs, so on and so forth. Eventually, i will have exhausted all the non-surgical options, and I'll probably opt for the surgery.
    RE: Sandy

Acutally, yes, I do have discomfort in my ears, as well as (gag) a lot of wax!

I've actually had fifteen reoccuring ear infections, as well as some vertigo and swimmer's ear. According to Wikipedia, this can be connected to the GERD and LPRD
I forgot to mention that I have the "lump" sensation associated with LPRD, as well as throat pain. I decided to add these details as others had commented that they have these symptoms. Although it is not relavent to my question, I feel these added details may help shed some light on their conditions.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastroesophageal_reflux_disease for GERD info, annd look for the links for LRPD and asthma

    • ANSWER:
Well, from personal experience I can say that, yes, it did have a great impact on my ability to breathe. Mine only flares up once in a while, but when it does, it gives me asthma. I am not allergic to anything and the feeling of not being able to breathe correctly while having the chest pain from the gerd was scary, I thought I was having a heart problem!!! Once I take the neccessary steps to get the gerd under control with my meds, better diet, and sleeping posture... then I can breathe free & easy again. I don't have the hiatal hernia, so I never needed the surgery. I wish you good luck!

edit/// To "Sandy": Yeah, my gerd did that too. It caused pain in my esophagus & throat... sometimes the pain shot up into my ribs, neck, and ears too!!! The nerves in my esophagus are weird like that. Sometimes, also, the acid that would come up at night would make my throat hurt and sometimes give me a hoarse voice & sore throat, which would affect my ears too!

I think you're confusing "help" with "doing all of your homework"

  39. QUESTION:
Help? Multiple conditions, looking for diagnosis? (cancer/autoimmune?)?
    Hello all,

I have come to the internet in desperation after years of constant medical problems that seem to have no end. My GP is not very helpful. It is getting to the point where my medical problems have taken over my life and I would like to just know what is wrong (if anything).

I am an obese 20 year old female. I had multiple ear infections as a child; my ear drum popped twice so I have slight hearing problems in one ear. At seven, my tonsils and adenoids were so large that I suffered from severe sleep apnea, so they were removed as the ENT was worried about brain damage. When I was six, they discovered that I was missing 9 adult teeth and they considered it to be a genetic defect of some sort, the cause was never investigated. Aside from cholestrol issues at 8 (solved through the Atkins diet, ironically enough), I was very healthy from about age 7 to puberty. At this point, I was just a little chubby. Puberty hit, and I gained probably 70-80lbs in a year. Although I developed in all other ways, I never produced a period. This was not dealt with until last year. Around this time, I started suffering from gastro-intestinal distress but it was tolerable, so life continued.

Around 14, I noticed that my left pupil was constantly dilated. I had multiple test and was referred to many doctors before I was diagnosed. They had suspected a brain injury/tumor (cancer was brought up), but it turned out to be Adie's tonic pupil. Adie's can be caused by lesions on the neurons/muscles that contract the pupil, or it has no cause (like in my case). There is also no cure.

Then I discovered a large lump on my right foot. Doctors orginally thought it was osteomyelitis, or sarcoma/similar cancer. I underwent multiple tests. They still weren't positive what it was, but they decided surgery was the best option so it was removed in January. It turned out to be an ostechondroma, so they removed it, I spent 3 mos on crutches and they told me that there was less than 5% chance that it would ever recurr. It had recurred by the time I went back for a checkup. Because of it's incredibly fast regrowth, they were worried it had come back as a malignant lesion so I underwent surgery again in August of the same month. Turned out it was just a regrowth of the osteochondroma, so they removed a ton of bone from the surrounding areas as well, so I was non-weight bearing and on crutches for nearly 6 months this time. By the time I went for my 3 month checkup, it had regrown. I was referred to a new, younger orthopaedic surgeon for another surgical option but it was an extreme idea so I declined. The foot is just xrayed 3x a year to make sure it doesn't become malignant.

At this same time, I also had dental implant surgeries to try and correct my missing adult teeth. Also, my gastro-intestinal distress became so severe that I couldn't function properly so I was sent to a gastro-entrologist as my mother sufferes from Crohns disease and they were afraid I did too. My GP sent me for a blood test for Celiac, but it came back as negative. She suggested I go gluten-free anyways because sometimes the blood test is wrong. I went gluten free and almost all my gastro symptoms disappeared. I went for an endoscope and colonscopy approximately 8 months after I went gluten free, but by then (as the gastro-enterologist explained to me) any damage to the villi from Celiac would have been healed, so no problems were found.

I had to have my gallbladder removed in Feb of this year due to gallstones, after which I developed GERD. I went to an OBGYN because I was 19 and had never had a period, and testing concluded that I have PCOS, or poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, which explains my excessive weight gain and lack of period. (I do have bad eating habits, but I should not be as large as I am - I have always been a very active person so the PCOS/hormonal imbalance explains some of that).

Finally, for the last year or so, I have been overwhelmed by all consuming exhaustion. I need about 12 hours of sleep to function, and the, and then that can usually get me through class or a bit of work, but then I need about a 3 hour nap if I want to do something in the evening. I was given 2 at home sleep apnea tests - the first came back as indictiative for central apnea (not obstructive!), the second test came back as inconclusive. I am currently on a 2 year wait list to get into our local sleep clinic.

Recently, I found a lump in my throat. The week later, I fainted at work. The ER doc performed blood work and an EMG, said it was probably heat exhaustion, which doesn't make sense at all. He also checked my throat lump, and said it was likely a cyst so he sent me to an EMT who said tonsil regrowth. I also have frequent dizzy spells, incidents where my eyes shake, recurrent headaches and a recurrent rash in my inner elbows and across my abodomen (not weight related). I am always incredibly flushed and hot & awake sweaty.

  41. QUESTION:
MY boyfriend is type 2 diabetic, he is eats well but lately is very depressed?
He is 48, in good health basically, except for his depression, he has 2 doctors all they do is give him more drugs, I tell him he needs to exercise, we need to turn a negative into a postive. We don't fight, yell, scream, we do love each other, it seems as if I'm the only 1 he wants to be around. He can't even leave the house sometimes it takes him a couple of days. I wait, give much understanding, I don't push him into an arguement. What I will do like tonight he wasn't even answering the phone to even talk to his daughter. I politely asked him what was wrong he said he didn't know wanted to go to bed. So we went to bed I wait untll he is asleep, cause he does have sleep apnea, needs a cpap machine. If this has to do with being a diabetic, depression, he also seems to be on the verge of breakdown. I love him, very much in love with him, but I know I can't cure him, nor make him better. All I seem to do is just listen to him, it comes and goes.

    • ANSWER:
Hi! What a good woman you are to be there for your b/f. I am t-1 for 48 years and I have had my share of depression. We do need all the support and need to vent about how we feel etc. Has he ever discussed with you what makes him feel depressed? That may help too. Does he watch his blood sugars? Lots of times some of us having too high of sugars will make us depressed but it also cause mood swings, being irritable. I also have days that I just want to be alone yet have someone around me just in case.
Diabetes nowadays is so different than when I was diagnosed. Being t-1 is not as bad as it used to be with all it's rules. Sure there are injections of which I take between 4-5 a day and all the finger sticks but hey, I am still here after all these years. No matter what age, race, male or female stress and depression are a big factor. I am under an awful lot of stress and it does affect my sugars and not in a good way. I do my darndest to control them but there are days that I just wish I wasn't diabetic.
Exercise is very important whether we are t-1 or t-2. It's healthy and it helps with stress, depression, sugars.
Your listening to him is a big deal. See, it is very hard for another person not being a diabetic to actually know how we feel and what we go through on a daily basis of what we feel. You see how he is and are trying to help which is super. You could go to the ADA Association on the internet and read up on us. There is always something to learn even for myself. I hope things turn around for him.
What about him joining a diabetic support group (WebMD is good) even if it's just to read other posts? He would be able to post himself after he joins. I belong to a couple boards and it's great and you also make friends and ones that are going through what other diabetics go through, even yourself; you can post too as a concerned g/f.
I really hope I have helped in someway. It is important that he at least tries to get out of that depression. Good luck and I mean that. Take care, both of you.

  42. QUESTION:
    Do you, ladies have PCOS?
I do, and i believe that all women who has , should start writing long letters to docs, explain how messed up can be and find not a treatment but A REAL CURE, for this curse of nature.

    my personal experience.
I got my period 14 years old, it was painful, like a stomach ache.
After my first period the second one came 5-6 months after. PAIN PAIN PAIN, VOMITING , LOW PRESSURE, FAINTING,COLD SWEATS, all these for 12 years, ( iim 26 now) and i didn't knew , my family didn't get me to the doctor, (messed up family, another big story), and when I went to a doc, she told me that i have them and its ok. I was 22 when i went and until now i didn't knew how serious can be.
    Did you know that:
More than 50 percent of women with PCOS will have diabetes or pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance) before the age of 40.
Women with PCOS have a four to seven times higher risk of heart attack than women of the same age without PCOS.
Women with PCOS are at greater risk of having high blood pressure.
Women with PCOS have high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol
    Chance of getting endometrial cancer
    the symptoms are:
infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating
increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes—a condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um)
    ovarian cysts
    acne, oily skin, or dandruff
weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
    high cholesterol
    high blood pressure
    male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
    pelvic pain
anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility
sleep apnea—excessive snoring and times when breathing stops while asleep
(Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms)

Thats is so messed up. I got :
Acne, depression, very irregular periods, increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, It ruined my life until now, because no doctor told me anything of those and i might have insulin resistance, because of my family background.
now i went to a hospital and im waiting for my next period so i can do some tests.
here in greece, docs saying " oh birth control pills are bad , don't take them, blah, blah blah, " fuck them , the minute i start birth control pills , is my happiest moments i.ve ever lived, no acne, no pains, everything is so perfect, now i stopped because i have to do the blood exams, and guess what..... ACNE ACNE ACNE, HAIR, SMALL BOOBS!
I took yasmin, and here in greece birth control pills cost like 10 euro, why in america cost like 60 dollars? because of the advertisment? here they don't do to much advertisment.

thanks, all ladies you can share if you want to.

All my life i thought that i was crazy, crazy bitch from hell, i was feeling bad and now i know.

I started my periods aged 12.
It lasted for two weeks and then if didn't come again until 5 months later! I thought there was something wrong with me.
Now I'm 16. That was four years ago and I still barely get my period. When I do, its very long and painful...

I have really bad acne on my face and back. I am also slightly fat and I can't shift the weight!
I want a solution. The tummy pains are the worst. I get them most when I'm stressed and that's not good when I'm sitting exams...
I speak to my doctor for help but he just sends me for a blood test to check my hormone levels. :( Ugh. I want help. :( :(:(

    • ANSWER:
      Life and Death.

Even if the fit person dies from a freak heart attack at 25 and the unfit person dies at 80, (s)he leads a BETTER life than the unfit person, because the *quality* of life is better.

A good exercise program also allows you to sleep *less* and eat less (relatively speaking) than the unfit person.

      Good Luck!

  44. QUESTION:
How do I cure insomnia while I am pregnant?
I am 4 1/2 months pregnant and insomnia came along with it. I cannot sleep at night and finds it precious to sleep during the day. My mother-in-law is freaking out because she thinks I intend not to sleep, plus, I told her yesterday after my monthly check up that I lost a pound. The reason behind that is that I threw up the morning before I went to see the doctor and didn't get to eat at all.
My husband and I live with them (his family) and they're all used to not sleeping early. I hear tv in my room, i hear doors opening and closing, i hear footsteps and i hear them talk sometimes. I can't do anything about it because it's what they're used to and it's their house. Plus, my husband has sleep apnea so he snores when he sleeps.
I feel so bad. What do I do? I don't ike them thinking that do not care for my baby by staying up at night and not sleeping at all. What I don't like more is that some other relatives get to know that, too, which I find not so nice. I just cannot sleep, that's it. They should know that pregnant women experience insomnia and not accuse me of being irresponsible. SIGH :(

    • ANSWER:
Darling I have Sleep Apnia, and have lived with many different cultures. I strongly suggest you try not to sleep during the day time. IF you are fit and your pregnancy is safe (you do not have a history of mis carriages) perform gentle exercises in your room before going to bed. Anything that does not put strain on your stomach and they can be done sitting in a chair or on your bed. USE EAR PLUGS! If your in the Philippines, I'm sure your can buy them in a Pharmacy, Drug Store, Chemist shop, or what ever the shop is called in your country! And they are cheap! In laws can be a big pain in the butt! Your husband needs to stand up for you and explain that what your experiencing is normal for a lot of women and they need to change their primitive attitudes and give you love and understanding so you are without stress at this difficult time. Your husband and you could benefit from him sleeping on his side facing a fan and have it blow air into his face. It will reduce his snoring. Also you can find aids in a pharmacy. They are like sticking plasters (band Aids) that fit over the snoring persons nose and make the nose holes larger while he sleeps! Good luck. Muleman.

  45. QUESTION:
    Hyperventilation: Is there a cure?
I have had a problem with breathing for 2 solid months now. It all started on 4/17/08. I seem to take deep breaths to feel like I am getting enough air. I have had EKGs, CT scans on my chest, a Stress Test, Spirometry (breathing test). All have come out fine. I have been told it is Anxiety. I have been on Lexapro, side effects were too bad. I have been on Zoloft, did nothing but give me insomnia. I have been taking Ativan for 2 months, I am a afraid I am being hooked, my psychiatrist, is not concerned though. She wants to try me on Paxil, but I do know if being on too many "head drugs" is a good thing. I have also been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and I am on a CPAP. Can ANYONE give me some kind of answer to this? It is consuming my life!!

  46. QUESTION:
    Sinus infection relief?
I've been sick for 5 days straight now, I started on Thursday sick with the Flu. When I got rid of the Flu, I got strep throat/sinus infection (symptoms: Burning throat, runny nose, inflamed sinuses)

Now, I could probably deal with this, but as a result of my inflamed sinuses I have sleep apnea now according to my mom. That's why I'm up at 4:55 AM typing this, because I don't want to go to sleep for fear of suffocation. Does anyone know of any kind of home remedy to sinus inflammation? It doesn't have to completely cure it, just relieve it enough to where I can get some sleep.

I've already tried taking a hot shower and it only relieves it so far as I stay in the shower, I also don't own a vaporizer.

    Thx for the answers.

  48. QUESTION:
How did I get sleep apnea? Can it be cured? What did I do to get this suddenly?
    I was diagnosed with
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 3 years ago, at age 38, out of the clear blue sky. I hear it is hereditary but no one in my family has this. How in the world could such a disease just be acquired out of the clear blue?? I hear it could lead to stroke, heart attack and all sorts of stuff. How in the world do I get rid of this and how in the world did I get it????????

    • ANSWER:
Sleep apnea is very common in individuals who are oveweight. The excess tissue around the neck can partially obstruct the airway while you are sleeping. If you are not overweight, it is also possible you have enlarged tonsils or a particularly large tongue, both of which can also cause similar problems. The cure is to fix the problem, either weight loss or tonsillectomy. With sleep apnea, you literally stop breathing for a short time, but this happens tens to hundred of times throughout the night. You won't die in your sleep from this, but your body responds by waking you up (typically it's for such a brief time that you aren't even aware of it). But the accumulation of waking up for these brief spells throughout the night results in daytime sleepiness. You should also know that sleep apnea is associated with pulmonary hypertension, which can lead to both lung and heart disease down the road. Until you are able to lose weight, your doctor can prescribe a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. It is a mask that you wear at night which pushes positive pressure into your throat to maintain the airway open. You don't feel the air at all but the mask itself takes some getting used to. Hope this helped, good luck!

Please. Please, Please help. I would appreciate it more that you will ever know.
